The tools rattled.
Sophie gasped.
Mr. Chen stepped forward.
“Madam, please—”
“Stay out of this,” Vivian snapped.
Elena steadied herself.
She straightened her blazer.
She looked at Vivian.
And for the first time, she saw the woman not as a difficult customer but as a test of everything Elena intended to change.
The company had trained its staff to remain gracious when mistreated.
It had taught them to absorb humiliation as part of the service.
It had made their dignity negotiable.
Elena would not let the pattern continue.
Vivian threatened to have her fired.
Then she reached out to shove her again.
Daniel rushed from the fitting-room corridor.
He saw the torn dress, the scattered tools, Elena’s posture, and Vivian’s raised hand.
He went pale.
“She isn’t the tailor anymore,” he said. “She owns this store.”
The silence that followed was different from the silence before.
It was no longer fear.
It was disbelief.
Vivian’s face lost its color.
Elena did not smile.
She did not celebrate the revelation.
She simply held out her hand for the gown.
“May I have it back?”
Vivian hesitated, then released it.
Elena laid the dress flat on the table.
“Thank you.”
She turned to Sophie.
“Please bring the incident log and the intake record.”
Then she addressed Mr. Chen.
“Could you photograph the seam and document the existing alterations?”
“Of course.”
Finally, she looked at Daniel.
“Please ask security to preserve the footage from this area. We’ll need a copy for the incident report.”
Daniel nodded, still visibly shaken.
Vivian’s voice rose.
“You can’t be serious.”
Elena met her gaze.
“I am.”
“You’re going to make a scene over a dress?”
“No. You have already made a scene. I’m documenting it.”
Vivian looked toward the shoppers.
“You all saw what she did.”
No one answered.
Elena turned slightly toward the witnesses.
“If anyone saw the interaction and is comfortable providing a statement, the manager will take it privately. No one is required to speak in front of Ms. Ashford.”
Vivian scoffed.
“You’re treating me like a criminal.”
“I’m treating an incident seriously.”
“You have no idea what you’re doing.”
Elena’s voice remained even.
