“Would you like to see it closer?”
The woman nodded.
“It’s beautiful. I’m curious about the construction.”
“Of course. Our head tailor can explain the details.”
Sophie guided her toward Mr. Chen.
The woman listened attentively as he described the fabric, the internal reinforcement, and the hand-sewn finish.
Then she asked whether the dress could be altered.
Mr. Chen explained the available options and the limits of the design.
The woman smiled.
“That’s very helpful. Thank you for being honest.”
Sophie glanced toward Elena.
Their eyes met.
Elena gave a small nod.
Sophie returned to the customer, confident and composed.
A little later, the woman approached Elena.
“Ms. Marquez?”
“Yes.”
“I wanted to tell you how much I appreciate the way your staff handled my questions.”
Elena smiled.
“Thank you. I’m glad they could help.”
“They were knowledgeable without being pushy. And your tailor explained the limitations clearly. I felt as though I was being treated like a person rather than a transaction.”
Elena felt the words settle deeply.
“That’s exactly the experience we hope to provide.”
The woman glanced toward the tailoring table.
“Your team seems proud of their work.”
“They are.”
“It shows.”
Elena thanked her.
The woman continued through the boutique.
For a moment, Elena stood still.
She thought of Vivian’s words on that terrible afternoon.
I spend more in this store in one afternoon than you probably earn in a year.
The statement had been intended to diminish her.
But the truth was that the value of the company had never rested solely in what customers spent.
It rested in the people who could make a complicated garment fit beautifully, in the associate who could understand what a nervous bride needed, in the manager who could resolve a problem without sacrificing an employee, and in the craftspeople who knew how to make a seam strong enough to endure movement.
It rested in the quality of the work and the dignity of the people who performed it.
Elena walked toward the tailoring table.
Mr. Chen was finishing his demonstration.
“Everything going well?” she asked.
“Very well.”
“Any issues?”
“None.”
“Good.”
He smiled.
“You look pleased.”
“I am.”
“Because the event is successful?”
“Because the team is working together.”
Mr. Chen glanced around the room.
“Yes,” he said. “That is a good thing.”
Near the end of the evening, Elena received a message from Rebecca.
The board has approved the next stage of your expansion plan. Congratulations.
Elena read it, then put her phone away.
