“She emailed finance.”

“Said it was for estate planning.”

“Did they send it?”

“Basic annual statements.”

“Nothing confidential beyond what she already had access to through household tax filings.”

Ethan felt anger spread slowly.

“Why didn’t anyone ask me?”

“She said you knew.”

Of course.

Ethan leaned back.

“What exactly?”

Colin brought records.

Vivian had requested ownership percentages.

Revenue.

EBITDA summaries.

Insurance values.

Shareholder agreement status.

Not enough to steal a company.

Enough to estimate what divorce might mean.

Two months before asking for “space.”

Ethan sent it to Rebecca.

Her reply came almost immediately.

This supports pre-separation planning. Important, but do not overinterpret motive yet.

Ethan overinterpreted motive anyway.

That night Vivian sent nothing.

For the first time since leaving.

It should have been relief.

Instead Ethan kept checking the phone.

At midnight he became angry at himself and turned it off.

Day nine, Tessa sent approved screenshots through her attorney.

Rebecca forwarded them.

Ethan read three.

Then stopped.

Not because they were sexual.

They were not.

They were worse.

Mason: Are you really leaving him?

Vivian: Temporarily. I need him to understand I have options.

Mason: That’s not the same as leaving.

Vivian: Ethan doesn’t let go. He’ll wait.

Mason: And if he doesn’t?

Vivian: He will.

Ethan stared at the final sentence.

He will.

Not I hope.

Not I think.

He will.

Another exchange.

Mason: I’m not making promises until I know you can actually separate.

Vivian: Give me two weeks.

Mason: And the others?

Vivian: What others?

Mason: You told Ethan you were “exploring.”

Vivian: That’s what makes this defensible. I can’t leave for one married man. That makes me the villain.

Ethan stopped reading.

He walked outside.

The lake behind the house was calm.

Vivian had called the arrangement exploration because an existing affair sounded worse.

Not self-discovery.

Narrative management.

He understood her profession suddenly in the cruelest possible way.

Vivian did not merely plan events.

She controlled presentation.

Lighting.

Timing.

Entrances.

How guests perceived a room.

Apparently she had tried to stage the collapse of their marriage the same way.

Ethan sat on the dock until dark.

On day ten at 9:44 p.m., Vivian called.

He let it ring.

A voicemail followed.

“Okay, I’ve had enough time to think.”

Her voice sounded lighter.

Almost ordinary.

“I’ll come home tomorrow afternoon.”

“We need to talk.”

“Probably around three.”

Fourteen seconds.

Ethan listened twice.

Come home.

Not may I.

Not can we meet.

Come home.

He called Rebecca.

“She says she’s returning.”

“She has residency rights until court says otherwise.”

“I know.”

“Do not block entry.”

“I won’t.”

“Do not create confrontation.”

“I’m not.”
