The table set.

Two candles.

He stood in the doorway.

“What is this?”

“Dinner.”

“I see that.”

“I thought we could eat.”

He almost left.

Then stayed.

Not because he wanted romance.

Because food did not have to become evidence too.

They sat.

Vivian poured wine.

Ethan covered his glass.

“No.”

She put bottle down.

For five minutes they ate silently.

Then she said:

“I started therapy.”

He looked up.

“Good.”

“Her name is Dr. Levin.”

He nodded.

“She asked why I thought you would wait.”

Ethan put his fork down.

“What did you say?”

“I didn’t know.”

He almost smiled.

“That seems to be popular.”

Vivian ignored it.

“Then I thought about my parents.”

Ethan listened.

“My dad left three times.”

“He always came back.”

Ethan knew parts of that history.

Not this framing.

Vivian continued:

“My mother acted like his leaving was weather.”

“Terrible.”

“But temporary.”

“When he returned, she never asked what happened.”

“She just restored everything.”

Ethan looked toward her.

“You thought marriage worked that way.”

“I think I did.”

She swallowed.

“Some part of me.”

“That doesn’t excuse it.”

“I know.”

He believed she meant that.

For the first time.

Vivian continued:

“Mason made me feel…”

She stopped.

Ethan waited.

“Chosen.”

He looked down.

“That’s difficult to hear.”

“I know.”

“I’m not telling you to hurt you.”

“I know.”

She continued.

“With you, I felt established.”

“Like the house.”

“The business.”

“Everything had a place.”

“With him, I felt wanted every time I walked into a room.”

Ethan’s face tightened.

Vivian noticed.

“I’m sorry.”

“No.”

“Finish.”

She hesitated.

“I should have told you how bad it had become.”

“You did tell me sometimes.”

“Not clearly.”

“I’d complain about trips.”

“You’d offer to cancel one.”

“Then I’d say it was fine.”

“You’d believe me.”

Ethan nodded slowly.

“I should not have.”

“No.”

“I should have meant what I said.”

They both sat with that.

Ethan eventually asked:

“When did it become physical?”

“April.”

“Was that the first time?”

“Yes.”

“Before you asked for space.”

“Yes.”
