She smiled.

“I don’t need all of it.”

Luke looked skeptical.

Six months later, Evelyn moved in.

She brought twelve boxes of clothes after promising six.

Luke said nothing.

Wisdom had arrived with age.

The mansion remained.

They used it occasionally.

But home became Luke’s house.

Evelyn liked the kitchen window.

The neighborhood.

The fact that Noah barged into rooms without scheduling himself through an assistant.

She kept her office downtown.

Home stopped being another workplace.

Three years after the roadside, Luke drove past the exact highway shoulder where they met.

Noah was in the passenger seat.

Evelyn sat behind them answering email.

Luke slowed.

“That’s it.”

Evelyn looked up.

“What?”

“The spot.”

She stared through the window.

Noah asked, “Where Dad ruined his interview?”

“I did not ruin it.”

“You were late.”

Evelyn smiled.

“He was very late.”

Luke pointed toward her.

“Your tire was flat.”

“You chose to stop.”

Noah grinned.

“So technically Mom got Dad hired by getting a flat.”

Silence.

Luke and Evelyn both looked at him.

Noah froze.

“What?”

He had said Mom.

Not Evelyn.

Mom.

He realized it too.

His face changed.

“I didn’t mean—”

Evelyn spoke gently.

“It’s okay.”

Noah looked at her.

Luke did not speak.

This belonged to them.

Noah swallowed.

“Do you mind?”

Evelyn’s eyes filled.

“No.”

“Because I know you’re not my real—”

Luke interrupted.

“Careful.”

Noah looked confused.

Luke kept his eyes on the road.

“Sarah is your mother.”

“Yes.”

“That doesn’t make Evelyn unreal.”

Evelyn looked toward him.

Luke continued.

“Families can have more than one true thing.”

Noah thought.

Then looked back.

“Okay.”

Evelyn wiped one eye.

Noah smiled.

“Mom.”

She laughed and cried at the same time.

Luke drove past the shoulder.

Nothing visible marked the place.

No plaque.

No sign.

Just wet asphalt and guardrail.

Good.

Important things did not always need monuments.

Luke proposed a year later.

Not extravagantly.

He considered recreating the flat tire.

Evelyn threatened to leave if he did.

So he chose home.

Friday evening.

Noah at Rachel’s.

Dinner cooked badly by Luke.

Evelyn ate anyway.

Afterward, he brought out the ruined black umbrella.

She stared.

“You kept that?”

“For historical reasons.”

“You stole my property.”
