“You abandoned it.”

“That sounds legally questionable.”

Luke smiled.

He had repaired the umbrella poorly.

Tape around one rib.

Fabric slightly uneven.

From the handle hung a ring.

Evelyn covered her mouth.

Luke said, “I thought about buying a new umbrella.”

She laughed through tears.

“This is terrible.”

“I know.”

He removed the ring.

“I had the most important interview of my life.”

She smiled.

“And you missed it.”

“I did.”

“You should have driven past.”

“Probably.”

“You would have gotten the supervisor job.”

“Maybe.”

“And avoided me.”

“Financially safer.”

She laughed.

Luke became serious.

“I spent years thinking the best thing I could give Noah was security.”

He looked toward the family photographs on the wall.

“Then I met someone who made me realize security is not the same as never taking risks.”

Evelyn’s eyes filled.

Luke knelt.

“I don’t want you because you changed our lives.”

He smiled.

“Although the dental insurance helped.”

She laughed.

“I want you because after everything changed, you stayed.”

He opened the box.

“Will you marry me?”

Evelyn crouched in front of him rather than making him remain kneeling.

“You know I hate dramatic pauses.”

“I do.”

“So yes.”

Luke smiled.

“Yes?”

“Yes.”

They kissed.

The repaired umbrella collapsed beside them.

Neither noticed.

They married the following spring.

Small ceremony.

No business press.

No industry executives except Robert, who brought an expensive bottle Luke refused to open because he intended to sell it someday if retirement went badly.

Noah stood beside Luke.

Before the vows, he whispered, “Your tie is crooked.”

Luke looked down.

“It has personality.”

Noah smiled.

He remembered.

During the reception, Evelyn danced with Noah.

Luke watched.

Rachel stood beside him.

“You did good.”

Luke looked toward her.

“Meaning?”

“Life.”

He laughed softly.

“I got lucky.”

“No.”

Rachel looked toward Evelyn.

“You stopped.”

Luke understood.

One decision.

Pull over.

Lose time.

Help a stranger.

But life was never that simple.

Stopping had mattered.

So had showing up late.

So had doing the interview.

So had Evelyn reading his résumé beyond the roadside story.

So had every decision after.

Luck opened doors.

People still had to walk through.

Years passed.

Carter Aerospace grew.

Luke eventually became vice president of manufacturing reliability.

He hated the title.

Noah graduated high school.

Then engineering school.

To Luke’s delight and horror, he joined a rival aerospace company.

“Traitor.”

Noah smiled.

“They pay better.”
