“No.”

“I should’ve told.”

“You did.”

“Earlier.”

He looked at her.

“How long has the phone-call thing been happening?”

The older girl thought.

“Maybe two months.”

“What happened?”

“Before you called, Mom told her what to say.”

“What things?”

“That school was good.”

“That she loved dinner.”

“That she missed you.”

“She did miss me.”

“I know.”

The older girl looked at her hands.

“She told her not to ask when you were coming home.”

“Why?”

“Because you might come sooner.”

That sentence changed the father.

Until then, part of him still believed he had simply missed warning signs.

Now he understood something more deliberate.

His wife had managed his access.

Not completely.

Enough.

He traveled four to six nights each month.

Sometimes more.

She knew his schedule.

She knew exactly when to behave differently.

The father whispered:

“How did I not know?”

The older girl answered honestly.

“Because she’s different when you’re here.”

He looked toward her.

The girl continued.

“Really different.”

“What happens when I’m home?”

“She gives her extra dessert.”

His face tightened.

“She hugs her.”

“She asks about school.”

“She lets us watch movies.”

“And when I leave?”

The girl did not answer.

He already knew.

The next morning, investigators documented the house.

The missing mattress.

Punishment list.

Food-control notes on the refrigerator calendar.

Video files from the older girl’s tablet.

A locked pantry latch positioned high enough that children could not reach it.

The father had never noticed the latch because his wife told him it was for pest prevention.

It was not.

The older girl’s recordings were short.

She had hidden the tablet in different places.

The hallway.

Laundry room.

Bookshelf.

One recording showed the younger girl standing against a wall while the stepmother sat nearby scrolling through her phone.

The video ran thirty-six minutes.

The child barely moved.

Another showed the stepmother throwing a plate of food into the trash after the girl said she was full before finishing vegetables.

“If you waste food, you don’t get the next meal.”

Another captured the stepmother telling both girls:

“Your stepfather doesn't want to hear complaints when he works this hard.”

The older daughter’s voice asked:

“What if something’s actually wrong?”

Her mother answered:

“Then you tell me.”

Another recording was worse.

The younger child cried because she could not find a photograph of her mother.

The stepmother stood in the doorway.

“You need to stop living in the past.”

“Where is it?”

“I put it away.”

“Give it back.”

“You have a new family.”

“She’s my mom.”

“She was your mom.”

The video shook.

The older girl recording from the hall whispered something.

Then the stepmother saw movement.

The clip ended.

The father watched once.

His attorney stopped him from watching again.

“You have investigators for that.”

“She said those things to my child.”
