“No, you didn’t.”

“She refused food.”

“No.”

“She throws tantrums.”

“No.”

“She lies.”

“You lie!”

The stepmother took one step toward her daughter.

The father moved between them immediately.

“Enough.”

The stepmother stared at him.

“You think you know everything because of one video call?”

“No.”

The older girl wiped her face.

“There’s more.”

Everyone turned.

Her mother whispered:

“Don’t.”

The older girl looked directly at her stepfather.

“I recorded other things.”

The stepmother’s face went white.

“What?”

The girl reached toward the sideboard.

There was a tablet inside a decorative drawer.

She retrieved it.

Her mother moved.

The family-services officer blocked her.

The older girl unlocked the device.

Her hands shook badly.

“There’s a folder.”

Her stepfather stared.

“How long?”

“Three weeks.”

The father closed his eyes.

The girl continued.

“I didn’t know what to do.”

“You should have come to me.”

“I was scared.”

“I know.”

“No, you don’t.”

He looked at her.

“She told me if I said anything, I’d have to go live with my dad.”

The stepmother said quickly:

“Her father has custody rights.”

The older girl shouted:

“He hasn’t called me in two years!”

The room went quiet.

Her biological father lived in another state.

Rarely present.

The older girl had never discussed him much.

The stepmother had used that absence like a threat.

The girl looked at her stepfather.

“She said you only let me live here because of her.”

She pointed beneath his daughter.

“She said if I defended her, you’d stop loving me.”

The father’s face broke.

He handed his younger daughter carefully to the family-services officer.

Then he crossed toward the older girl.

His wife said:

“Don’t.”

He ignored her.

He crouched in front of the eleven-year-old.

“Look at me.”

She could barely.

“I love you.”

Her mouth trembled.

“I’m not your real daughter.”

“I know.”

The girl flinched.

He continued.

“And I love you.”

She started crying harder.

“You don’t have to become my biological child for me to love you.”

The stepmother looked away.

The father said:

“What you did tonight took more courage than most adults have.”

The girl whispered:

“I should’ve done it sooner.”

“No.”

“Yes.”

“No.”

“I watched.”

His eyes filled.

“You are a child.”

“I knew.”

“You are not responsible for what an adult chose to do.”

The older girl looked toward her mother.

“I helped sometimes.”

The father paused.

“What do you mean?”

The girl’s face collapsed.

“When Mom said not to give her food, sometimes I didn’t.”

The younger girl looked toward her.

The older girl began shaking.

“I’m sorry.”

The younger child slipped down from the officer’s arms.

Everyone looked at her.

She walked toward her stepsister.

The older girl backed away.

“I’m sorry.”

The little girl hugged her.

No one spoke.

The older child dropped to her knees.

“I’m sorry.”
