The clerk seemed to realize how strange the refusal sounded.

She immediately added:

“The regional office is in a closed briefing.”

The Black man looked toward the staircase.

“Then I can wait.”

The clerk exhaled.

“Sir.”

“Yes?”

“I need you to understand something.”

He waited.

“This is not a normal retail environment.”

He looked around.

“I noticed.”

The junior associate looked down.

The clerk continued.

“Our private collection is reserved for clients with established purchasing capacity and verified relationships.”

The Black man’s expression changed.

Only slightly.

“Purchasing capacity.”

“Yes.”

“How do you verify that?”

“Client history.”

“Financial qualification.”

“References.”

“Existing relationship.”

He nodded.

“And which of those have you actually checked for me?”

The clerk paused.

“Your profile returned nothing.”

“In the system you already admitted may not contain it.”

She said nothing.

He continued.

“You did not call private client services.”

“No.”

“You did not call upstairs.”

“No.”

“You did not verify the email.”

“No.”

“You did not ask for a banker reference.”

“No.”

“You did not ask for a family-office contact.”

The clerk frowned.

“You have a family office?”

The Black man held her gaze.

“That was not the question.”

Silence.

“You have verified nothing.”

He looked toward the security specialist.

“Yet somehow we have reached purchasing capacity.”

The clerk’s face hardened.

“You are twisting my words.”

“No.”

“I’m repeating them.”

The security specialist stepped slightly between them.

Not because he expected violence.

Because the temperature of the room had changed.

The older couple in the consultation area were now watching openly.

The Asian American collector at the chronograph case had stopped examining the watch.

The junior associate stood near the counter with both hands clasped nervously.

The blonde clerk glanced around.

Public embarrassment had arrived.

That changed everything.

“Sir,” she said, “I think it would be best if you left and rescheduled through the proper channel.”

The junior associate stared at her.

The Black man did not move.

“Leave.”

“Yes.”

“Before the appointment time.”

The clerk checked the clock.

11:23.

“You do not have a verified appointment.”

“I showed you the email.”

“You showed security an email.”

“Yes.”

“Which we cannot verify.”

“Because you refuse to call the person who sent it.”

The security specialist looked toward the clerk.
