“Your head.”

At salon, he did not go into styling area.

He sat in waiting section pretending to read a magazine.

When the scissors first closed, his body remembered.

Bridal suite.

Tears.

Hair on vanity.

He breathed.

Looked up.

Ava was smiling.

That changed the sound.

Same scissors.

Different meaning.

Consent transformed the entire scene.

When she finished, Ava emerged with hair above shoulders.

Daniel stared.

“Well?”

she asked.

“You look older.”

“That is not a compliment.”

“You look great.”

“Better.”

Rachel hugged her.

Ava donated the cut hair.

Not because she had promised at age eight.

Because she decided at sixteen.

The donation receipt went into her desk drawer beside Lauren’s old apology letter.

Two years later, Ava graduated high school.

Lauren attended.

Not inside.

She wrote Daniel several months before.

Ava is graduating. I know I have no right to be there. If she would be comfortable, I would like to watch from a distance. If not, I will not come.

Daniel showed Ava.

She read.

Then:

“She can come.”

“You sure?”

“Yes.”

“Do you want to see her?”

“I don't know.”

“Okay.”

Lauren sat near the back of football stadium.

Daniel recognized her immediately.

Hair shorter.

Older.

She came alone.

After ceremony she remained near bleachers.

Ava saw her.

Stopped.

Daniel did nothing.

Ava walked over.

Rachel and Daniel waited twenty yards away.

Lauren smiled nervously.

“Hi.”

Ava smiled.

“Hi.”

“You look beautiful.”

Ava touched her shoulder-length hair.

“You mean the hair?”

Lauren’s face tightened.

Ava smiled faintly.

“Kidding.”

Lauren laughed, then almost cried.

“I deserved that.”

“Probably.”

Silence.

Lauren looked at graduation gown.

“I’m proud of you.”

Ava nodded.

“Thanks.”

Then:

“I read your letter sometimes.”

Lauren swallowed.

“Okay.”

“I believe you were sorry.”

“I was.”

“I know.”

Lauren’s eyes filled.

Ava continued.

“I was angry for a long time.”

“You had every right.”

“I don't need permission for that either.”

Lauren smiled through tears.

“No.”

“You don't.”

Ava looked back toward Daniel.

Then at Lauren.

“My dad loved you.”

Lauren’s face changed.

“I know.”

“He was sad for years.”

“I’m sorry.”

“I’m not telling you so you'll be sorry.”

Ava shrugged.

“I used to think if he missed you, it meant he wished he had married you.”

Lauren shook her head.

“No.”

“I know that now.”

Ava took a breath.

“Anyway.”

“Thank you for asking before coming today.”

Lauren cried quietly.

“You're welcome.”

Ava hesitated.

Then hugged her.

Briefly.

Lauren froze.

Returned it carefully.

When Ava stepped back, Lauren whispered:

“Thank you.”

Ava said:

“It’s a hug.”
