He had hoped his first month in the new role would involve fewer neighborhood complications.

Apparently not.

The woman whispered:

“Chief?”

The lead officer looked confused.

“You didn’t know?”

The father raised one hand.

“Hold.”

Everyone stopped.

He looked toward his officers.

“I’m the complainant and involved party.”

The sergeant nodded immediately.

“Understood.”

“I do not want you treating this as my order.”

“Yes, sir.”

“Handle it like any other call.”

The HOA president found her voice.

“He’s your police chief?”

The father turned toward her.

“Yes.”

Her eyes moved over his T-shirt again.

His jeans.

The ordinary house.

The black Audi.

Everything reclassified in her mind.

That angered him.

Not because she had underestimated him.

Because she had become cautious only after discovering rank.

He looked toward the sergeant.

“Before anything else, body cameras.”

“Active.”

Good.

Then:

“I want an outside supervisor notified.”

The sergeant nodded.

“County?”

“Yes.”

The HOA president stared.

“That is unnecessary.”

The father looked toward her.

“It’s very necessary.”

“You’re the chief.”

“Exactly.”

He turned back to the sergeant.

“I don’t want my department investigating a complaint involving me if we can avoid it.”

The sergeant used his radio.

Requested county assistance.

The HOA president looked increasingly uneasy.

She had expected the revelation to end the encounter in the father’s favor instantly.

Instead he was slowing everything down.

Preserving it.

That frightened her more.

The lead patrol officer asked:

“Chief, are you okay?”

“Yes.”

“Any physical contact?”

“No.”

“Threats?”

The father looked toward the HOA president.

“She falsely reported I threatened them.”

The woman immediately objected.

“I perceived his behavior as threatening.”

The father nodded.

“Record that.”

She stared.

The officer did.

The father continued:

“My spare vehicle key was removed from a lockbox inside my garage.”

The patrol officer looked toward the Audi hood.

The key rested there.

“Who removed it?”

The teenager’s face went pale.

His mother answered:

“The association accessed it pursuant to enforcement authority.”

The sergeant blinked.

“What enforcement authority allows entry into a private garage?”

She lifted the manila papers.

“This.”

The sergeant did not take them.

He looked toward the father.

“Chief?”

The father stepped away.

“Don’t ask me legal conclusions.”

The sergeant nodded.

Correct.

The woman seemed irritated.

She extended the papers toward the officer.

“Read it.”

He accepted them.

Scanned the first page.

Then the second.

His eyebrows rose.

“Who prepared this?”

“The board.”

“Attorney?”

“Association counsel reviewed our enforcement powers.”

“That isn’t what I asked.”

The woman’s face tightened.

The sergeant continued reading.

The teenager looked toward the father.

“Am I in trouble?”
