Her carefully styled hair.

Her expensive boots.

The handbag on the floor.

He had spent the past ten minutes finding reasons to believe none of those things were genuine.

Now he was being told she owned the company whose name appeared above his head.

He swallowed.

"Madam, I didn't realize—"

She raised one gloved hand.

He stopped.

For a long moment, she simply looked at him.

Then she spoke the sentence that would follow him for the rest of his professional life.

"Would you have treated me differently if you had known?"

The manager's lips trembled.

"Of course."

The answer escaped before he understood what it meant.

The executive closed his eyes.

The saleswoman looked toward the floor.

And the woman in blue nodded slowly.

"Then we have a much bigger problem than my handbag."

She turned toward the blonde saleswoman.

"Would you please retrieve my bag without touching the damaged hardware?"

The younger woman nodded immediately.

"Of course, ma'am."

Then the owner looked toward the security guard.

"Thank you for refusing to use force."

He appeared startled.

"I was just trying to do my job."

She studied him.

"That is precisely what you were doing."

Finally, she turned toward the executive.

"Preserve the security footage, the customer complaint records, and the store's internal communications. No footage is to be deleted or edited. And no employee is to be punished for describing what happened."

The executive nodded.

"Immediately."

The manager stepped forward.

"Madam, surely we can discuss this privately."

She looked toward him.

"We will."

He appeared relieved.

Then she continued.

"But not before we establish the facts."

Her voice remained calm.

"And not before you explain why a woman had to own this company to be treated like a human being inside it."

The manager stared.

His face had turned a sickly shade of gray.

But the worst discovery of his afternoon was still waiting.

Because when the owner finally picked up her damaged handbag, she noticed something lying beside it.

A tiny piece of cobalt-blue fabric had slipped from an interior pocket when the bag struck the display.

It was old.

Faded.

Hand-stitched.

And embroidered with a small silver flower.

The woman stared at it.

Her expression changed.

For the first time since entering the boutique, her composure broke.

She bent down slowly.

Picked up the fabric.

And held it between her fingers.
