He produced a written instruction.
The signature was questionable.
Silas denied issuing it.
The matter was investigated as possible theft and document falsification.
There was no immediate proof connecting Horace Whitmore to the incident.
But the recovered instruction became another record to preserve.
Eleanor placed a copy in the growing file beside the bank letters, supplier statements, and correspondence from Massachusetts.
Silas watched her.
The folder had become thick.
Far thicker than he liked.
He sat at the table.
Then sighed.
"Never thought marriage involved this much paperwork."
Eleanor looked up.
She smiled faintly.
"Not every marriage does."
He nodded.
"Good. I was beginning to think the whole country had gone mad."
She laughed.
Then closed the folder.
For a moment, they sat quietly.
Silas reached toward her hand.
She took it.
He looked into her eyes.
"Are you sorry?"
She frowned.
"For what?"
"Coming here."
Eleanor stared.
Then shook her head.
"No."
He studied her.
"Even after everything?"
She smiled gently.
"Especially after everything."
For a moment, he seemed unable to speak.
Then she leaned closer.
"I've learned more about being free in two months at this ranch than in twenty-seven years in Boston."
Silas swallowed.
She continued.
"And I've learned that freedom isn't the same as never needing anyone."
His expression softened.
She smiled.
"Sometimes it means having someone who doesn't punish you for needing help."
Silas closed his eyes.
For a moment, the words seemed to reach a place inside him that had been empty for years.
Then he opened them.
And whispered, "Eleanor."
She waited.
He smiled faintly.
"I'm beginning to think you're the strongest person I've ever met."
Tears gathered in her eyes.
She laughed softly.
"That's a very generous assessment."
He shook his head.
"No."
He squeezed her hand.
"I've known men who could lift enormous weights, ride through storms, and fight without fear."
He paused.
"But you left everything familiar because you knew something was wrong."
Eleanor swallowed.
Silas continued.
