“It happened.”
Hollis took the report from her hand.
Tore it in half.
Elena stared.
Then reached for her radio.
“Dispatch, Deputy Torres requesting—”
The sheriff slapped the radio away.
Everything followed.
The shove.
The fall.
His boot.
The counting.
The state team entering.
Now, as investigators filled the parking lot, Elena understood something she had not expected.
The sheriff did not look angry anymore.
He looked betrayed.
That almost made her laugh.
He stared at her state credentials.
“You lied.”
Elena brushed grit from her trousers.
“About my employer.”
“You sat in my briefings.”
“Yes.”
“Ate with my people.”
“Yes.”
“You recorded us.”
“Lawfully.”
His face hardened.
“You came into my house.”
Elena looked toward the sheriff’s building.
“Public building.”
“My department.”
“No.”
Again.
That word.
No.
The sheriff’s jaw trembled.
Director Marcus Bell approached.
Dark suit beneath a blue state vest.
He looked first at Elena.
“You hurt?”
“Shoulder.”
“Medical?”
“Later.”
Bell looked toward Hollis.
“Sheriff Dean Hollis.”
The sheriff raised his chin.
“Director Bell.”
They knew each other.
Of course.
Texas law enforcement was a smaller world than outsiders imagined.
Bell held up a warrant.
“State court authorized search of specified digital systems, evidence records, complaint archives, supervisory devices, and detention camera servers.”
Hollis smiled coldly.
“You think you can walk into my jail?”
Bell looked at him.
“We already are.”
Behind them, investigators entered the building.
Hollis took one step.
A state agent blocked him.
Not touching.
Enough.
The sheriff looked toward his deputies.
“Price!”
Sergeant Price appeared at the rear entrance.
Stopped.
Saw the state vests.
Then Elena.
Then Hollis.
His face collapsed.
“Sheriff…”
Hollis barked, “Tell them they don’t touch anything without county counsel.”
Bell answered.
“County counsel received notice eleven minutes ago.”
Hollis stared.
Elena watched Mason.
He stood slightly apart.
Hands trembling.
Bell looked at him.
“Deputy Cole?”
Mason swallowed.
“Yes, sir.”
“Your body camera active?”
“Yes.”
“Do not deactivate it.”
Mason nodded.
Bell continued.
“You witnessed physical contact between Sheriff Hollis and Investigator Torres?”
Mason looked toward Hollis.
The sheriff stared back.
Eleven weeks of fear condensed into one second.
Elena said nothing.
This had to be Mason’s choice.
He opened his mouth.
Nothing.
