“For some things.”
“Yes.”
The hearing established the deed’s authenticity.
The bank’s mortgage became more complicated.
The banker had known the title history was questionable.
He had intentionally relied on the brother’s representation and the stable woman’s signature obtained without independent explanation.
The judge invalidated the lien against her property.
The bank could pursue brother personally.
The stable remained hers.
When the judge announced the ruling, the stable woman expected triumph.
Instead she felt tired.
The mountain man waited outside courthouse.
He did not ask until she walked to him.
“Well?”
She held up recorded deed.
“It’s mine.”
His smile came slowly.
“Yes.”
She looked at the official stamp.
“Do you know what’s strange?”
“What?”
“I thought once somebody admitted it was mine, I’d feel different.”
“How?”
“Bigger.”
“Strong.”
“Vindicated.”
“And?”
“I feel exactly like woman who woke before sunrise yesterday.”
The mountain man nodded.
“Paper can change ownership.”
“Not person.”
She looked at him.
“That sounds wise.”
“I stole it from experience.”
They stood.
Then she asked:
“What do you want?”
The mountain man smiled.
“My winter lease.”
“Full price.”
“Cruel.”
“And?”
He took a breath.
“To court you.”
Her heart moved hard against ribs.
She looked at courthouse steps.
At the man who had brought deed but had not used it to demand gratitude.
At the man who repeatedly asked rather than decided.
“Why?”
“Because I like you.”
“That simple?”
“No.”
“But that’s enough to begin.”
“If I say no?”
“I pay my lease and keep distance.”
“If I say yes?”
“I ask again tomorrow.”
She almost smiled.
“Ask what?”
“What you want.”
She looked at him.
Then:
“Yes.”
His face changed.
“To courtship,” she warned.
“I heard.”
“Not marriage.”
“I heard.”
“You sleep in bunkhouse.”
“Yes.”
“You pay for horse damages.”
“Yes.”
“You do not repair anything without asking.”
He laughed.
“That rule feels targeted.”
“It is.”
“Agreed.”
Courtship was not dramatic.
That was why it worked.
The mountain man left for supply runs.
Returned when he said.
Wrote letters when delayed.
The stable woman continued business.
He did not appear every time a customer challenged her.
Sometimes she wanted him to.
Then chose to answer herself.
One rancher demanded to speak to “the man who owns the place.”
The stable woman said:
“You are.”
He frowned.
“What?”
“You are speaking to person who owns it.”
“I mean man.”
She pointed toward road.
