It wasn't.

The next morning, there were two birds.

The following afternoon, three.

By the fourth day, Claire was seeing caracaras every time she walked toward the pasture.

They gathered on fence posts.

They perched on the roof of the old equipment shed.

They circled over the pasture.

Atlas seemed to notice them.

At first, he ignored them.

Then something changed.

He stopped moving whenever the birds approached.

Claire stood by the fence one afternoon and watched.

One caracara descended.

It landed on the ground approximately ten feet from Atlas.

The bull lifted his head.

The bird walked forward.

One step.

Then another.

Atlas didn't move.

The bird approached his shoulder.

Then it jumped onto his back.

Claire held her breath.

The caracara walked across the bull's hide.

It stopped.

Bent its head.

And pecked.

Atlas flinched.

The bird pecked again.

Then it lifted something from his hide.

Claire stared.

She knew exactly what it was.

A tick.

The bird swallowed it.

Claire's mouth opened slightly.

Another bird landed.

Then another.

Within minutes, three caracaras were moving across Atlas's back.

They worked methodically.

Atlas stood still.

For the first time since Claire had bought him, he seemed almost peaceful.

Claire slowly sat down beside the fence.

She watched until sunset.

The story spread before Claire could stop it.

Someone saw the birds.

Someone else took a photograph.

The photograph appeared in a local ranching group.

By the next morning, people were talking.

โ€œThat's Claire's tick bull.โ€

โ€œShe's letting birds eat them.โ€

โ€œShe actually believes those birds are going to cure him.โ€

โ€œThey won't.โ€

โ€œShe's crazy.โ€

Claire heard all of it.

She didn't care.

She continued following the veterinarian's treatment plan.

She continued cleaning Atlas's water trough.

She continued improving his nutrition.

And she continued allowing the birds to come and go.

The caracaras became increasingly comfortable around him.

They weren't afraid of Claire either.

Sometimes they watched her from the fence.

Sometimes they followed Atlas as he walked.

Sometimes they landed directly on the rails beside her.

Claire began recognizing individual birds.

One had a slightly crooked tail.

Another had a pale mark around one eye.

A third was larger than the others.

She began calling that one Captain.

She knew it was silly.

She didn't care.

There was something almost peaceful about watching them work.

The birds weren't miracles.

They didn't replace veterinary care.

They didn't magically solve every problem.

But they were helping.

And Atlas was changing.

Two weeks after the auction, the difference was visible.

Atlas's eyes were brighter.

He walked more.

His appetite had improved.

His skin still carried parasites, but the worst clusters were noticeably reduced.

The veterinarian examined him and nodded.

โ€œHe's responding.โ€

Claire smiled.

โ€œThat's good.โ€

โ€œVery good.โ€

The veterinarian ran a hand along Atlas's neck.

โ€œHe has a lot of fight left.โ€
