Then she walked away.

The executive restroom corridor remained silent after she disappeared.

The general counsel looked at the vice-chairman.

“You should get some water.”

The older man snapped:

“I’m fine.”

“No.”

The counsel’s voice softened.

“You aren’t.”

The vice-chairman stared.

The lawyer continued.

“Take the five minutes.”

The vice-chairman walked toward his office.

Nobody followed.

The moment he turned the corner, the corridor erupted into whispers.

“What just happened?”

“Did he know?”

“Obviously not.”

“Why was she dressed like that?”

“Was this planned?”

“Are we all getting fired?”

The board secretary raised one hand.

Silence.

“Conference room.”

Everyone obeyed.

The incoming CEO changed in seven minutes.

Navy suit.

White blouse.

Low heels.

Hair still in the same high puff.

No heavy jewelry.

No dramatic transformation.

She looked like herself.

That was important.

The uniform had not hidden another person.

It had only changed what others allowed themselves to see.

She entered the boardroom at 10:59.

Everyone was seated.

Board members on one side.

Senior executives at the back.

Witnesses from the corridor along the wall.

The vice-chairman sat in his usual chair two seats from the head.

He looked straight ahead.

The CEO walked to the chair at the head of the table.

Her chair.

No one spoke.

She set down a thin folder.

Then sat.

“Good morning.”

A scattered chorus answered.

“Good morning.”

She looked around.

“For some of you, this is our first meeting.”

A few nervous smiles.

“For others, we met twenty minutes ago.”

No one smiled.

The CEO continued.

“I had prepared remarks.”

She touched the folder.

“They are excellent.”

A few people relaxed.

Then:

“We will not be using them.”

Tension returned.

She folded her hands.

“I spent this morning walking the building.”

“Lobby.”

“Service corridor.”

“Cafeteria.”

“Mail room.”

“Executive floor.”

She looked toward the vice-chairman.

“No one knew who I was.”

“That gave me a version of the company I could not have purchased from a consulting report.”

One board member leaned forward.

“What did you see?”

The CEO looked around.

“I saw a security officer hold an elevator for a catering employee while two executives walked past without acknowledging either.”

“I saw a receptionist remain calm while a senior director blamed her for a visitor error caused by his own assistant.”

“I saw facilities staff warn each other before entering certain executive offices.”

That produced movement.

The CEO noticed.

“I saw an analyst carry coffee for a managing director who never stopped his phone call long enough to say thank you.”

She paused.

“And I saw a board vice-chairman kick a scrub brush toward someone he believed cleaned toilets.”

The vice-chairman’s jaw tightened.

One board member looked toward him.

Another remained stone-faced.
