β€œI don't know. Old agreements don't automatically remain enforceable in every circumstance, and the water-use questions are even more complicated.”

Grace nodded.

β€œBut you kept records?”

The old man smiled faintly.

β€œSome.”

He removed a folded paper from the bottom of the box.

It contained an old reference to a shared maintenance arrangement and a description of the route through the six properties.

Noah leaned forward.

The drawing looked almost exactly like Grandpa's notebook.

Six lines.

The northern fence.

The cottonwood stump.

And the black circle.

Then he noticed something.

Grandpa's version contained a seventh mark.

A small square beside the sixth row.

Noah pointed.

β€œWhat's that?”

Ezra frowned.

He examined the drawing.

Then looked toward the notebook.

For several seconds, his expression changed.

β€œFrank added that.”

Noah felt his heart pounding.

β€œWhat is it?”

Ezra looked toward the barn.

Then back at the boy.

β€œI'm not sure.”

Grace studied the page.

For a moment, she seemed disappointed.

Then Ezra continued.

β€œBut I remember Frank mentioning a sealed records box his father wanted preserved near the old works.”

Noah stared.

β€œA box?”

Ezra nodded.

β€œHe said the family papers should stay with the farm until somebody needed them.”

For several seconds, nobody moved.

Then the old man looked toward the six rows.

β€œAnd I'm beginning to think your grandfather left you a way to find it.”

The conservation district sent a technician named Dr. Olivia Chen the following Thursday.

Olivia was thirty-eight and worked with a regional soil and water conservation program. Her experience included agricultural hydrology, shallow groundwater systems, soil moisture, and water-management projects.

She arrived with practical equipment and very little patience for exaggerated claims.

Noah liked her almost immediately.

When he asked whether the old spring could save the entire farm, she shook her head.

β€œNot enough information.”

He looked disappointed.

She smiled.

β€œThat doesn't mean nothing is there. It means we shouldn't decide what it can do before examining it.”
