The boy nodded.

He could accept that.

Then a worker examining the surface layout noticed something beside the old fence post.

A flat iron plate was set into a sheltered section of the structure, separate from the damaged access chamber.

Its edge was visible beneath years of soil.

The plate carried several raised letters.

Noah stared.

He recognized the shape from Grandpa's drawing.

The square.

Beside the sixth row.

Olivia looked toward Grace.

β€œWas this mentioned in the family records?”

Grace handed her the notebook.

For several seconds, the technician examined the sketch.

Then she nodded.

β€œLooks like the same location.”

The plate was part of a small records compartment rather than the main water chamber. After the professionals confirmed it could be examined safely, they documented the opening and arranged for the contents to be removed without disturbing the old drainage works.

Noah held his breath.

Inside lay a narrow sealed metal box.

Its surface was rusted.

The latch had deteriorated.

But the container remained intact.

When it was brought to a safe work area, Grace stared at it.

For a moment, her hands began trembling.

Then she looked toward Noah.

β€œYour grandfather knew this was here.”

The boy nodded.

He couldn't speak.

The box was placed in the care of the family and its attorney for careful opening and documentation.

They didn't force it apart beside the field.

They didn't throw away the corroded exterior.

And they didn't assume the papers inside would be readable after so many decades.

Instead, they preserved everything as carefully as possible.

Noah found the wait almost unbearable.

Three days later, attorney Claire Hollis called Grace.

β€œWe've opened the box.”

Grace sat down.

Noah was beside her.

He leaned so close he could hear the voice through the phone.

Claire continued.

β€œThe contents survived remarkably well.”

Grace closed her eyes.
