The black SUV stopped behind the compact sedan.
Two people stepped out.
Plain clothes.
State identification clipped at their belts.
A uniformed highway patrol lieutenant arrived behind them.
Then another vehicle.
The blond deputy looked toward the bald deputy.
Neither spoke.
The young investigator kept the phone running.
The Black trucker looked down again at the broken CDL.
One half lay face up.
Her photograph had split through the forehead.
The blond deputy’s boot still rested partly over it.
She pointed.
“Move your foot.”
He looked at her.
Then at the investigator.
The investigator said nothing.
He did not need to.
The deputy lifted his boot.
The Black trucker bent slowly and picked up both pieces herself.
She wiped dust from them with her thumb.
Her hand was shaking.
Only slightly.
She hated that he could see it.
The young investigator noticed.
He did not comment.
A woman in a dark suit approached from the unmarked SUV.
Late forties.
Hair pulled back.
State credential displayed openly.
She stopped beside the young investigator.
“Recording continuous?”
“Yes.”
“Uploaded?”
“Yes.”
The blond deputy looked at him.
“Uploaded where?”
The woman ignored him.
She looked toward the trucker.
“Ma’am, I’m with the State Office of Inspector General.”
The trucker held up the broken license.
“I gathered that.”
The woman looked at the pieces.
Her face hardened.
“Did one of these deputies do that?”
“The blond one.”
The woman nodded.
“Do you consent to us photographing those pieces?”
“Yes.”
“Do not hand them to anyone yet.”
The trucker closed her fingers around the card fragments.
The state supervisor looked toward the uniformed highway patrol lieutenant.
“Can you verify her license electronically?”
The lieutenant pulled out a tablet.
“Name and date of birth?”
The trucker gave both.
The tablet searched.
The lieutenant nodded.
“Class A commercial license active.”
“Endorsements current.”
“No suspension.”
“No restrictions beyond corrective lenses.”
The Black trucker tapped the side of her face.
“I’m wearing contacts.”
The lieutenant nodded.
“Fine.”
He looked at the deputies.
“No basis to tell her she cannot drive from the license status.”
The blond deputy interrupted.
“We had probable cause.”
The state supervisor finally turned toward him.
“For what?”
“Unsafe lane change.”
“Then why was her license destroyed?”
“She became confrontational.”
The supervisor looked at the Black trucker.
Then back.
“Did she strike you?”
“No.”
“Threaten you?”
“Not physically.”
“What does that mean?”
“She was argumentative.”
The investigator standing beside them said:
“She requested the legal basis for a vehicle search.”
The supervisor nodded.
“Was there contraband visible?”
“No.”
“Odor?”
“No.”
“Dog alert?”
“No dog.”
“Warrant?”
“No.”
“Emergency?”
