Lily thought.

“Not because Daddy saves scared girls.”

Bear smiled slightly.

“Good.”

She continued.

“Because grown-ups can look stupid too.”

“That is a noble cause.”

She elbowed him.

“Seriously.”

“I am.”

Lily looked at pink tulle.

“Kids think everybody is watching them.”

“Maybe if they see this, they remember adults can survive being laughed at.”

Bear stared at her.

“You got all that from fabric?”

“No.”

“Therapy.”

He laughed.

The tutu returned to Mara’s studio.

Not behind glass.

Hung on a peg in rehearsal room.

A small handwritten card beside it:

Emergency Courage Tutu. Anyone may borrow.

No names.

No viral references.

Children used it.

Not only fathers.

A grandmother wore it once.

A teenage brother.

A shy little boy who did not want to wear it himself asked his mother to.

Mara did twice.

Bear refused forever.

When Lily was seventeen, the dance academy celebrated its thirtieth anniversary.

Mara planned a community performance.

Former students returned.

Lily agreed to dance one piece.

Bear bought a ticket.

Third row.

Mara had done that on purpose.

He noticed.

Before performance she walked past and whispered:

“Your seat.”

“Cruel.”

“You'll survive.”

Lily’s piece was nothing like the flower-basket recital.

No pink costume.

She wore black pants and a white shirt.

The music was quiet.

The choreography slow.

Bear understood none of the technical meaning.

Still, he knew when his daughter was telling truth with movement.

Halfway through, Lily stopped.

Not because she forgot.

Part of choreography.

She stood still.

Spotlight.

Audience.

Bear’s heart reacted before brain.

He was back twelve years.

Five-year-old.

Tears.

Frozen knees.

Then Lily turned toward him.

Only for a moment.

She lifted one hand.

Not calling.

Not asking.

Acknowledging.

Then continued.

Bear’s eyes filled.

At the final bow, Lily walked to stage edge.

“Before we finish…”

Bear immediately became suspicious.

“No.”

People laughed.

Lily smiled.

“Dad.”

“No.”

“I haven’t asked yet.”

“I know your face.”

Audience turned.

Bear considered escape.

Lily said:

“Could the owner of the Emergency Courage Tutu please come up?”

The room erupted.

Bear covered face.

Mara appeared in aisle holding the tutu.

The exact one.

Older.

Patched.

Bear pointed at Lily.

“This is betrayal.”

Lily laughed.

“Come on.”

Bear shook his head.

Then remembered something.

Choice.
