“Bossy.”

She smiled through tears.

The other children reached the next section of choreography.

Lily looked at them.

Something in her memory returned.

She stepped sideways.

Duke followed.

He was half a beat late.

She lifted the basket.

He had no basket.

So he formed his enormous hands into a pretend one.

A few audience members laughed again.

Different laughter.

Warm.

Not cruel.

Lily heard it.

Her shoulders tightened for an instant.

Duke immediately leaned down.

“They’re laughing at me.”

She looked up.

“Not you.”

He deliberately attempted the next turn.

It was terrible.

His boots squeaked against the stage.

His shoulders rotated while the rest of him seemed to reconsider the entire concept halfway through.

Lily burst out laughing.

Now the audience did too.

Duke grinned.

“See?”

Lily wiped her cheek with the back of her wrist.

Then she remembered another step.

And another.

Her fingers loosened around his hand.

Duke felt it.

He did not let go first.

He waited.

That mattered.

He had learned that from Lily’s mother.

Never pull away just to prove they can stand.

Let them decide when they’re ready.

Lily moved into the next position.

Her grip loosened completely.

Duke lowered his hand.

She took one step without him.

Then two.

Her flower basket lifted.

Her arms rose.

The other girls were finishing the final section.

Lily joined them.

Not perfectly.

She was behind by half a count.

Then one of the girls beside her slowed slightly.

Another matched.

Children have ways of helping each other without discussing it.

Within seconds Lily had found the rhythm.

Duke backed away.

His chest hurt.

Not physically.

Something deeper.

He had spent weeks worrying that stepping onto the stage would embarrass her more.

Now she was moving by herself.

That meant his job was over.

He smiled.

Took another step backward.

Lily turned.

The choreography called for the girls to face the opposite direction.

Instead she saw him leaving.

Her expression changed.

“Daddy.”

Duke stopped.

Lily ran.

Not far.

Only several small steps.

But she abandoned the formation.

Mara’s eyes widened in the wings.

Lily grabbed two of Duke’s fingers with both hands.

“No.”

The microphone near the stage edge picked up her voice.

Duke bent toward her.

“What?”

She was crying again.

But smiling.

“You can’t go.”

“Baby, you got it now.”

She shook her head hard enough to loosen one tiny hairpin.

“No.”

Then she said the sentence nobody in the room expected.

“We finish together.”

Duke’s face changed.

The giant biker stared at his daughter.

Lily pulled his hand.

“Come on.”

Duke looked toward Mara.

Mara was crying openly now.

She nodded.

Duke returned.

The other six girls gathered around them.
