Owen pointed.

Russell’s face changed.

“I forgot that existed.”

“You knew?”

“Caleb left it when he moved.”

“What’s on the tape?”

“I don’t know.”

Owen stared.

“You expect me to believe you?”

Russell’s eyes hardened.

“Yes.”

Trust.

After nine years, that should mean something.

Owen nodded.

Anna sat.

They placed the tape into the recorder.

The batteries were dead.

Russell muttered:

“Technology.”

Owen found replacements.

The motor clicked.

Static.

Then Caleb’s voice.

Young.

Very young.

Maybe twenty-one.

“Testing.”

Russell laughed immediately.

“Oh, no.”

Another voice entered.

Younger Russell.

“If you record me, I’m breaking it.”

Caleb laughed.

“Bear says he’s going to break government property.”

“That’s not government property.”

“It came from an Army surplus store.”

“That does not mean—”

Static.

Then music.

Bad guitar.

Voices.

Hours of fragments.

Not a final message.

Not a deathbed revelation.

Ordinary life.

That made it more valuable.

Caleb and Russell arguing about carburetors.

Talking about rent.

Laughing.

A woman named Denise neither remembered.

Caleb saying:

“One day I’m gonna have a house.”

Russell:

“You can’t pay electric here.”

Caleb:

“House.”

“Wife.”

“Kid.”

Russell laughed.

“You?”

“Absolutely.”

“What kind of woman marries you?”

“Smart one.”

“That contradicts itself.”

Anna covered her mouth.

Owen stared at the recorder.

The tape continued.

Caleb:

“I’m gonna be different.”

Russell’s younger voice became quieter.

“Different from what?”

“My dad.”

Long pause.

Russell:

“Easy target.”

Caleb laughed.

Then:

“No.”

“I mean I’m staying.”

“If I have a kid, I stay.”

The room became silent.

Owen looked toward Russell.

The older man’s face had gone pale.

The tape continued.

Russell said:

“You don’t know where you’ll be.”

Caleb answered:

“Doesn’t matter.”

“You stay.”

Static.

Then the recording changed.

Years later.

Different voice.

Caleb older.

“Bear, stop touching that.”

Russell:

“It’s my recorder.”

Caleb:

“You said it was mine.”

Russell:

“I lied.”

Then Anna’s own voice.

Faint.

Young.

She froze.

“Caleb?”

He laughed.

“Hold on.”

Anna heard herself say:

“Who are you talking to?”

“My boyfriend.”

“You’re not funny.”
