Confidently.

That fascinated her.

People rarely lie by inventing complete fantasy.

They usually take emotional truth and manufacture details around it.

Richard felt embarrassed.

He resented Maya.

Therefore, in his mind, she must have caused the resentment.

The purser returned.

“Ms. Washington, we need everyone calm before departure.”

Maya almost admired the neutrality.

It was useless, but elegant.

“I am calm.”

“I can see that.”

“Then why say it to me?”

Melissa paused.

Good question.

Richard watched.

Maya continued:

“He made an accusation.”

“You investigated.”

“I denied it.”

“Unless there is evidence, we should be finished.”

Melissa nodded slowly.

“I agree.”

Good.

The matter should have ended there.

Then Captain Thomas Arrington entered the cabin.

That changed everything.

He had heard the phrase passenger conflict through the crew channel.

Thomas hated delays.

He hated passenger disputes more.

Flight 408 already faced an eleven-minute ground hold.

The captain walked directly toward Melissa.

“What’s going on?”

Melissa said:

“It’s resolved.”

Thomas looked toward Maya.

Then Richard.

“What happened?”

Richard spoke first.

Of course.

“This passenger became aggressive during boarding.”

Maya turned.

Melissa interrupted.

“Captain, we handled it.”

Thomas ignored her.

He stepped toward Maya.

“Did you threaten another passenger?”

“No.”

Richard scoffed.

Thomas looked back.

“Sir?”

Richard said:

“She’s lying.”

Maya felt something inside her settle.

Not anger now.

Clarity.

Thomas turned back.

“What exactly did you say?”

“To him?”

“Yes.”

“That I was in the correct boarding lane.”

“That’s it?”

“Yes.”

Thomas looked toward Richard.

He repeated his invented story.

The captain’s jaw tightened.

Maya saw the decision happening.

Not investigation.

Decision.

Thomas had already identified the easiest way to avoid departure trouble.

Remove one person.

Which person?

The one he believed would create less institutional resistance.

Maya.

Thomas said:

“Ms. Washington, gather your things.”

The cabin went silent.

Maya looked at him.

“No.”

He seemed stunned.

“No?”

“I have a valid ticket.”

“You are interfering with departure.”

“I am seated.”

“You have been involved in a disturbance.”

“Someone complained about me.”

“Yes.”

“That is not the same thing.”

Thomas stepped closer.

“I don’t debate passenger removal decisions.”

Maya looked toward Melissa.

The purser looked alarmed.

She said:

“Captain, I don't think removal is necessary.”

Thomas’s head turned sharply.

“I’ll handle this.”

Melissa stopped.

There it was again.

Hierarchy.

Maya saw it.

Thomas looked at Maya.

“Gather your things.”

She took out her phone.

“What is your full name?”

His eyebrows rose.

“Excuse me?”

“Your full name.”

“Captain Thomas Arrington.”

“Thank you.”

She began recording.

Thomas noticed.

“Turn that off.”

“No.”

“This is a private aircraft environment.”
