Amara understood immediately.

There had been no explicit demand from Langford.

Evelyn had anticipated it.

She had humiliated a passenger because she believed an important client might prefer the seat.

That detail somehow made everything worse.

Amara looked at Charles.

“Your assigned seats are 4A and 4B.”

He frowned.

“I usually sit here.”

“Not tonight.”

“Why?”

“Because 2A is occupied.”

Charles looked at Amara.

Then at the green coat.

Then at Richard.

“This is ridiculous.”

Amara nodded.

“It was.”

Charles stepped closer.

“I spend nearly two million dollars a year with this company.”

Evelyn closed her eyes.

Amara studied him.

“Approximately 1.8.”

Charles stared.

“How do you know that?”

Amara smiled.

“Because I approve the client portfolio.”

His face changed.

He finally recognized the name.

“Bennett?”

“Yes.”

“Amara Bennett?”

“Yes.”

Charles looked around.

The entire scene rearranged itself in his mind.

“Oh.”

Amara pointed toward the mid-cabin.

“Your seats are ready.”

Charles immediately nodded.

“Of course.”

His wife looked at him.

“That’s it?”

He whispered, “Get on the plane.”

She smiled.

“I like her.”

Charles said nothing.

Ten minutes later, Richard and Evelyn walked down the aircraft stairs under escort from HR.

No handcuffs.

No dramatic spectacle.

Amara did not want one.

Accountability did not require theater.

As Evelyn reached the bottom step, she turned back.

For one moment, she and Amara looked at each other through the open doorway.

Evelyn seemed as if she wanted to say something.

She did not.

The door closed.

At 7:39 p.m., the replacement captain arrived.

Her name was Dana Wilcox.

Forty-six.

Former Air Force transport pilot.

Nine years with Meridian Crown.

Amara had met her once during a safety conference.

Dana recognized her immediately but gave no visible reaction beyond a professional nod.

“Ms. Bennett.”

“Captain.”

“I’ve been briefed.”

“Good.”

“Are you comfortable continuing the flight?”

“Yes.”

Dana looked at the slight redness still visible along Amara’s cheek.

“Would you prefer medical evaluation before departure?”

“No.”

“Understood.”

She paused.

“If that changes, tell Claire.”

Amara nodded.

Dana returned to the cockpit.

Claire approached with a small cold pack wrapped in a linen napkin.

“For your face.”

Amara accepted it.

“Thank you.”

Claire hesitated.

“May I ask something?”

“Yes.”

“Were you really undercover?”

Amara laughed.

“I was trying to go home.”

Claire smiled nervously.

“Everyone downstairs thinks this was some secret inspection.”

“It wasn’t.”

“That almost makes it worse.”

“How?”

“You saw what we’re like when nobody prepares us.”

Amara looked at her.
