Basic crew view showed:
BENNETT, AMARA
CORPORATE TRAVEL
SEAT 2A
PRIORITY BLACK
Richard frowned.
Priority Black was unusual.
He had seen Priority Gold for high-value clients.
Platinum for ownership guests.
Black was used almost never.
“What is Black?”
Silence on the line.
Then the operations director said:
“Captain, open executive authentication.”
Richard entered his code.
The profile expanded.
The color drained from his face.
AMARA BENNETT
CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER
MERIDIAN CROWN HOLDINGS
PRIMARY BENEFICIAL OWNER
AIRCRAFT N814MC — OWNERSHIP AUTHORITY
EXECUTIVE SAFETY OVERSIGHT
Richard stopped breathing.
The operations director spoke again.
“Captain?”
Richard stared at the screen.
Behind him, the first officer looked over.
“What?”
Richard did not answer.
“Captain, confirm.”
He finally whispered.
“Confirmed.”
“And for absolute clarity, aircraft eight-one-four-Mike-Charlie is company-owned under Meridian Crown Executive Aviation Holdings. Ms. Bennett holds final corporate authority over its operation outside regulatory flight-safety command.”
Richard shut his eyes.
The first officer silently mouthed:
Oh no.
The operations director continued.
“Do not depart.”
Richard looked toward the cabin.
“Understood.”
“Ground compliance and regional HR are en route.”
Richard’s stomach dropped.
“Are they necessary?”
The answer came immediately.
“Yes.”
Outside the cockpit, Evelyn stood with one hand on the back of Amara’s seat.
“You know what your problem is?”
Amara looked at her.
“No, but I’m sure you’re about to explain.”
“You confuse money with class.”
Amara almost admired the irony.
Evelyn continued.
“Anyone can buy a ridiculous coat.”
The younger attendant looked horrified.
“Evelyn.”
“What?”
“Stop.”
Evelyn turned sharply.
“You stay out of this.”
The younger woman’s face reddened.
But she did not retreat.
“You hit her.”
“I said stay out of it.”
“You shouldn’t have.”
Evelyn took a step toward her.
Amara moved between them.
“Enough.”
Evelyn stared.
Amara’s voice remained quiet.
“Whatever happens next, you will not intimidate her for telling the truth.”
“Whatever happens next?”
“Yes.”
Evelyn gave another short laugh.
“You still don’t understand where you are.”
The cockpit door opened.
Richard stepped out.
He looked completely different.
His shoulders had dropped.
His face had gone pale.
Evelyn immediately pointed at Amara.
“She’s still refusing.”
Richard did not look at her.
He looked at Amara.
For the first time since entering the cabin, his expression contained no irritation.
Only dread.
“Ms. Bennett.”
Amara waited.
Richard swallowed.
“I need to apologize.”
Evelyn frowned.
“For what?”
Richard continued staring at Amara.
“Operations has clarified your status.”
Evelyn looked confused.
