For the first time that afternoon, grief reached through the discipline I had been using as armor.

I had imagined leaving my mother’s funeral exhausted.

Empty.

Maybe relieved that the hardest part was over.

I had not imagined watching it from the back seat of a police cruiser.

My phone rested inside an inner pocket beneath my uniform jacket.

I had muted it before entering the chapel.

The device had been configured for my travel and command responsibilities. If I was forcibly detained and failed to answer a secure check-in sequence, an alert could be sent to the appropriate duty channels.

It was not some magical alarm that summoned aircraft every time someone touched me.

It existed because people in sensitive positions sometimes traveled in unstable environments.

The system was intentionally quiet.

No audible warning.

No flashing display.

No dramatic countdown.

The officer had no idea it had activated.

Neither did I, with absolute certainty.

I suspected it had.

That was all.

Outside, the senior officer seemed pleased with himself.

His partner did not.

The younger officer suddenly looked down at his own phone.

His expression changed.

He read something.

Then read it again.

He looked through the cruiser window at me.

Back to his phone.

Then toward his partner.

“Daniel.”

The senior officer ignored him.

“Daniel.”

“What?”

“You need to see this.”

The senior officer turned.

His partner held out the screen.

I could not hear the next words through the glass.

But I saw the senior officer’s face.

First annoyance.

Then confusion.

Then something closer to anger.

He snatched the phone.

Read.

Looked at me.

Then at my shoulders.

The younger officer said something else.

The senior officer shook his head.

He pointed toward the chapel.

Then toward the road.

The younger officer stepped closer and spoke more firmly.

The senior officer pushed the phone back at him.

Even through the tinted glass, I could read the body language.

He was refusing whatever instruction had appeared.

Then I heard it.

Low at first.

A heavy rhythmic sound beyond the church bells.

Rotor blades.

Several mourners turned toward the sky.

The senior officer did too.

His face changed again.

A helicopter appeared beyond the trees.

Not directly above the chapel.

Farther out, banking toward the municipal field west of town.

At almost the same moment, three black government vehicles turned onto the chapel road.

The senior officer stared.

His partner whispered something.
