I could not hear every word.

But I saw his mouth form the final sentence.

“You need to uncuff her.”

The senior officer did not.

That decision changed everything.

He walked to the cruiser, opened my door, and leaned down.

“What did you do?”

I looked at him.

“Nothing.”

“Who did you call?”

“No one.”

“Don’t lie to me.”

“I have not placed a call.”

His partner approached.

“Dispatch says do not transport.”

The senior officer straightened.

“We already have custody.”

“They’re telling us to verify identity and hold position.”

“I know what they’re telling us.”

“Then why are you—”

“Because this is my arrest.”

The younger officer looked toward me.

Then toward the approaching vehicles.

“No.”

The senior officer stared at him.

“What did you say?”

“This isn’t your arrest anymore.”

Silence.

The younger officer’s voice shook, but he continued.

“Supervisor is coming.”

“County is coming.”

“And we’ve got some kind of federal protective liaison asking for status.”

The senior officer’s jaw tightened.

“You called them?”

“No.”

“Then who did?”

The younger officer looked at me.

I answered.

“My phone likely transmitted an automated duress notification.”

The senior officer laughed once.

“What are you, some kind of spy?”

“No.”

He stared at the stars on my shoulders again.

For the first time, he seemed to understand that they were not decorations.

The first black vehicle stopped near the chapel entrance.

A woman in a dark suit stepped out.

Then another official.

A county sheriff’s SUV arrived behind them.

The sheriff himself exited before the vehicle fully settled.

He was in his late fifties.

He took one look at me in the cruiser.

Then at the officer.

Then he stopped walking.

I knew the expression.

It was the expression of a man realizing that whatever explanation he had received over the radio had failed to prepare him for the reality in front of him.

“Officer,” the sheriff called.

The senior officer straightened.

“Sheriff.”

“Step away from the vehicle.”

“I have a detainee.”

“I can see that.”

“She matched a vehicle description connected to an active—”

“Step away.”

The officer hesitated.

The sheriff’s voice changed.

“Now.”

The officer stepped back.

The woman in the dark suit approached.

She did not look at him first.

She looked at me.

“Ma’am, are you injured?”

“No.”

“Do you require medical attention?”

“No.”

“Are the restraints causing pain?”

“Yes.”

She turned toward the sheriff.

The sheriff looked at the officer.
