“You are not detained.”

The distinction mattered.

“You may leave.”

Relief appeared.

Then Ava continued:

“But preserve your body-camera footage.”

His face changed again.

“Do not delete, alter, or interrupt recording.”

Keller touched the camera instinctively.

Ava's voice hardened.

“Don't.”

His hand dropped.

She looked toward the store's security cameras.

“Claire, preserve every angle from the moment I entered.”

“Yes.”

“Rachel, write down exactly what you remember while it's fresh.”

Rachel nodded.

The male associate whispered:

“Ms. Cole…”

Ava looked toward him.

His name was Evan Pierce.

Twenty-six.

Worked at Bellamy House seven months.

He swallowed.

“I am sorry.”

Ava said nothing.

He continued:

“I shouldn't have called.”

“Why did you?”

He looked down.

“I thought…”

Ava waited.

Evan struggled.

Claire said quietly:

“Finish.”

He did.

“I thought she didn't look like the clients who usually buy those pieces.”

The words were quieter than Keller's.

In some ways, more important.

Ava looked around the boutique.

The anonymous email.

The unequal hovering.

The warnings.

There it was.

Not policy.

Expectation.

A picture of who belonged.

She asked:

“Had I concealed merchandise?”

“No.”

“Attempted to leave?”

“No.”

“Removed a security tag?”

“No.”

“Refused assistance?”

“No.”

“Then what made you call police?”

Evan's eyes filled.

“I don't know.”

Ava shook her head.

“Yes, you do.”

He looked toward her.

“Say it.”

Claire watched.

Evan whispered:

“I decided you couldn't afford it.”

The sentence hurt more than Ava expected.

Not because she cared whether he thought she was rich.

Because he had converted that assumption into suspicion.

Poor-looking became criminal-looking.

Black became out-of-place.

Out-of-place became police.

That was the chain.

Ava nodded once.

“Thank you for answering.”

Evan looked surprised.

She was not forgiving him.

She was acknowledging honesty.

Different thing.

Keller moved toward the door.

Ava stopped him with one sentence.

“Officer.”

He turned.

Her voice remained calm.

“Who dispatched you?”

He hesitated.

“No dispatch.”

Ava's eyebrows lifted.

“I was nearby.”

“Doing what?”

“Walking patrol.”

“In the luxury district?”

“Yes.”

“Did Evan call emergency services?”

Evan shook his head.

“I used the direct detail number.”

Claire's expression changed.

“What direct detail number?”

Evan looked toward her.

“The one security gave us.”

Claire turned pale.

“We don't have a police detail contract.”

Everyone went quiet again.

Ava looked at Keller.

He looked away.

Interesting.
