The most frightening thing about the gun pointed at Marcus Williams wasn't its size.

It was its color.

Pastel blue plastic covered the handle. Transparent magenta panels glittered beneath the bright Georgia sunlight. A white plastic nozzle protruded from the front, and a tiny molded star decorated one side.

It was the sort of toy a seven-year-old girl might carry around the backyard while pretending to be a space explorer.

Marcus knew that particular toy better than almost anything else on his front porch.

He had bought it for his daughter three weeks earlier.

She called it her Rainbow Blaster.

And now a uniformed police officer was pointing it directly at his chest as though it were evidence of a serious crime.

"Hands where I can see them!"

Officer Derek Mason's voice cracked across the peaceful Sunday morning.

Marcus sat motionless in a cushioned patio chair outside his upscale suburban home in Maple Grove, Georgia. He was forty-six years old, broad-shouldered, with deep-brown skin, closely faded black hair, and a neatly trimmed beard beginning to show a few threads of gray.

He wore a fitted forest-green polo shirt, black trousers, and a stainless-steel wristwatch.

A folded newspaper rested across his lap. Beside him sat a white ceramic mug filled with coffee that had barely begun cooling.

The sprinkler system clicked rhythmically across the front lawn.

Birds moved through the trees.

A delivery van rolled quietly past the neighboring houses.

Everything about the neighborhood was ordinary.

Everything except the white police officer standing six feet away with a child's plastic toy aimed at a Black homeowner who had been doing absolutely nothing more threatening than reading the morning news.

"Officer," Marcus said carefully, raising both hands, "that belongs to my daughter."

Derek tightened his grip on the toy.

"I didn't ask who it belongs to."

"Then perhaps you should."

"Watch your mouth."

Marcus kept his hands visible.

"You're pointing a plastic toy at me on my own property."

Derek took another step forward.

"A neighbor reported an armed suspect."

Marcus looked at the toy.

"Armed with that?"

"Don't get smart."

The officer shifted his stance. His real service pistol remained secured in the holster on his right hip, but his left hand drifted toward his duty belt as his face reddened.
