The young woman smiled.

"If you see somebody trying to learn, don't laugh because they're young. Don't dismiss them because they don't have money. And don't assume they have nothing worth teaching you."

She paused.

"Because sometimes the person everybody overlooks is the person who notices what everybody else missed."

The audience rose in applause.

Not everyone at once.

First a few people.

Then more.

Until most of the barn was standing.

The young woman looked toward the old rancher.

He was standing too.

Clapping with both hands.

There were tears in his eyes.

And for the first time, the memory of the original auction no longer hurt the way it once had.

The building was the same.

The cattle pens were the same.

Some of the people were the same.

But the girl who had walked through those doors with seven dollars was not the same person anymore.

And neither was the man who had laughed at her.

Chapter Twelve: The Farm Worth Keeping

That evening, the young woman drove home along Kettlebend Road beneath a brilliant orange sunset.

The fields rolled gently toward the limestone ridge.

Wildflowers grew along the fence lines.

A flock of birds crossed the sky above the distant barns.

She turned through the farm gate and parked beside the farmhouse.

The old woman was sitting on the porch.

A blanket covered her knees.

She watched as the girl approached.

"How was the auction?"

The young woman smiled.

"Interesting."

"Buy anything?"

"No."

The old woman's eyebrows rose.

"Now that's what I call progress."

They laughed.

The girl sat beside her.

For a while, neither spoke.

Then the old woman asked, "Did you see him?"

"Yes."

"Still wearing that enormous hat?"

"Yes."

"Still talking too much?"

The young woman smiled.

"Not as much."

The old woman nodded.

"Good."

The sun sank lower.

Cattle grazed peacefully in the upper pasture.

The young woman could hear water flowing through the old stone channel.

She looked toward the barn.

A small sign hung above the entrance.

ALLRECK LIVESTOCK RECOVERY FARM

Beneath it, in smaller letters, someone had added:

Every Animal Deserves a Fair Chance.

The old woman noticed her staring.

"You know," she said, "your great-grandfather once told me something about this land."

"What?"

"He said people would probably never understand why he spent so much time repairing those old water channels."

The girl smiled.

"Why did he?"

"Because he knew the land could be useful long after he was gone."

The old woman looked toward the ridge.
