Darkened.

Letters beneath the grime.

May rubbed carefully.

Then stopped.

Her father’s name emerged.

S. CUTLER

Below it:

FIELD UNIT CUSTODIAN — 004

May forgot the crowd existed.

Her fingers remained on the brass.

Samuel Cutler.

Her father.

The name looked impossible there.

Not handwriting.

Not memory.

Metal.

Permanent.

Henry crouched beside her.

“Oh, Lord.”

May could not speak.

Vernon’s boots shifted.

Calvin turned away.

May looked up.

“Why is my father’s name on this tractor?”

No one answered.

She stood slowly.

Calvin moved toward the barn exit.

May pointed.

“Where are you going?”

He stopped.

“None of your business.”

Henry stood too.

“Calvin.”

Calvin looked back.

Henry’s voice carried across the barn.

“You bid on it after you realized she recognized something.”

“I bid seventy dollars on junk.”

“Then stay.”

Calvin’s eyes moved toward Vernon.

That was the mistake.

Only a glance.

Less than a second.

May saw it.

So did Henry.

So did half the barn.

Vernon’s face hardened.

“Everybody settle down.”

May stepped toward the podium.

“Where did the tractor come from?”

Vernon looked at his papers.

“Consignment.”

“Whose?”

“A liquidation company.”

“Name.”

“This isn't a courtroom.”

“Name.”

Vernon raised his voice.

“You do not get to interrogate me in my own auction.”

May lifted Samuel’s note.

“My father’s name is bolted to a tractor you called abandoned scrap.”

The crowd murmured louder.

She continued.

“You left the serial number out of the catalog.”

“You ordered me to stop bidding.”

“And Mr. Rusk suddenly bid after watching where I looked.”

“Tell me who consigned it.”

Someone near the benches called:

“Answer her, Vern.”

Another voice:

“Yeah.”

Vernon’s expression changed.

For twenty years men in that county had accepted his rhythm.

His rules.

His microphone.

His authority.

Now the room no longer belonged entirely to him.

He looked down.

“Midwest Agricultural Recovery.”

Henry frowned.

“Never heard of it.”

Vernon shuffled paper.

“Asset liquidation.”

“Address?” May asked.

“Lincoln.”

“Owner?”

“I don't memorize corporate filings.”
