She looked at the photographs.
Then the motorcycle.
Then her daughter.
“Oh.”
Sophie whispered:
“Dad built it for me.”
Rachel approached the frame.
Her fingers touched the engraved initials.
She covered her mouth.
Jack turned away.
This was family.
Then Gordon appeared behind her.
“Rachel.”
She looked at him.
The tenderness vanished.
“What are you doing here?”
“I could ask you the same.”
“This was my husband's shop.”
“Former husband?”
Rachel stared.
“Excuse me?”
Gordon corrected himself.
“Late business partner.”
Jack’s eyes narrowed.
Rachel said:
“David is not dead.”
The shop became quiet.
Sophie looked at her.
“Mom?”
Rachel closed her eyes.
She had said more than intended.
Sophie stared.
“What?”
Rachel turned.
“Sophie.”
“You said nobody knew.”
“We don't.”
“You just said he's not dead.”
“I said we have no reason to call him dead.”
“That's different.”
Rachel knelt.
“He disappeared from contact.”
“Yes.”
“His pipeline company said he left their Wyoming project after an accident.”
“What accident?”
“Why didn't you tell me?”
Rachel’s eyes filled.
“Because I didn't know enough.”
Sophie pulled back.
“You knew he got hurt?”
“I knew something happened.”
“That isn't the same as knowing where he is.”
Sophie looked betrayed.
Jack hated being present.
But there was nowhere to go without making the moment louder.
Rachel whispered:
“I was trying to protect you from waiting every day.”
Sophie answered:
“I waited anyway.”
Rachel closed her eyes.
That sentence broke her.
Gordon spoke from behind.
“This is exactly why sentiment should not control the property issue.”
Jack turned.
“Not now.”
Gordon ignored him.
“I spoke to a county deputy.”
“They're not intervening in civil ownership tonight.”
“But I am putting everyone on notice that removing partnership assets—”
Rachel stood.
“Partnership?”
“Yes.”
“You abandoned it.”
“I withdrew.”
“You took the tire machine.”
“It belonged to me.”
“You emptied the parts account.”
Gordon’s face hardened.
“That allegation was never proven.”
Rachel stepped closer.
“You left David with sixty-eight thousand dollars of supplier debt.”
Jack looked at Gordon.
Now the old rumors had numbers.
Gordon responded:
“And David signed the operating notes.”
Rachel laughed bitterly.
“After you moved inventory.”
“Careful.”
“No.”
Rachel’s anger had waited years.
“Don't tell me careful.”
Sophie watched.
Jack intervened quietly.
“Rachel.”
She looked at him.
He nodded toward Sophie.
Rachel breathed.
Right.
Child.
She stepped back.
Gordon looked victorious simply because she had stopped.
Jack disliked him more.
At ten-thirty, most of the motorcycle had been safely secured onto Maria’s trailer.
The unfinished machine could not simply roll.
They used the assembly stand.
Strapped the frame.
Boxed loose components.
Documented everything with photographs.
Gordon filmed continuously from near his truck.
