Both shoulder radios crackled at once.

Static burst across the roadside.

Every person froze.

A dispatcher's voice came through:

“Unit 214, stand down.”

Mitchell stared.

Barnes looked toward his radio.

The transmission repeated.

“Unit 214, stand down immediately.”

Mitchell keyed his shoulder mic.

“Dispatch, clarify.”

Silence for one second.

Then another voice.

Male.

Controlled.

Military.

“This is Fort Bradley Military Police Command.”

Mitchell's face lost color.

Daniel closed his eyes briefly.

Relief.

The voice continued:

“Officer Mitchell, release Colonel Daniel Henderson immediately.”

Barnes turned toward Daniel.

Mitchell stared.

The radio crackled again.

“Repeat. Release Colonel Henderson, commanding officer of Fort Bradley.”

The civilian filming gasped.

Mitchell's mouth opened.

Nothing came.

Daniel remained cuffed.

The military voice sharpened.

“Military police units are ninety seconds from your location.”

Far down the road, faint blue lights appeared through the trees.

Not county lights.

Different pattern.

Multiple vehicles.

Mitchell looked toward them.

Then at Daniel.

Then at the credential still lying on the cargo floor.

His breathing changed.

Barnes said quietly:

“Craig.”

Mitchell turned.

Barnes nodded toward Daniel's hands.

“Unlock him.”

Mitchell reached for the cuff key.

His fingers shook.

Daniel stepped back.

“No.”

Mitchell froze.

“What?”

Daniel looked at him.

“You are not touching me again.”

Barnes stepped forward.

“I can remove them.”

Daniel considered.

Then nodded.

Barnes approached slowly.

“Colonel.”

Daniel turned slightly.

Barnes unlocked the right cuff.

Then left.

Daniel brought his hands forward.

Red marks circled both wrists.

He flexed his fingers.

Mitchell stared.

“Colonel, I—”

Daniel raised one hand.

“Stop.”

Mitchell went silent.

Military police vehicles arrived fast but controlled.

Three SUVs.

One marked unit.

Two unmarked.

Behind them came a dark command vehicle.

Doors opened.

Military police exited.

No weapons drawn.

Hands visible.

Professional.

A lieutenant colonel stepped from the command SUV.

Black woman.

Forty-five.

Uniform sharp.

Lieutenant Colonel Maya Brooks, commander of Fort Bradley's Military Police Battalion.

She walked directly toward Daniel.

Her face revealed nothing until she saw his wrists.

Then everything disappeared again.

Professional mask.

“Sir.”

Daniel nodded.

“Colonel Brooks.”

“You injured?”

“Knee. Wrist. Nothing severe.”

“Medic en route.”

“Good.”

Brooks looked toward Mitchell.

Not long.

One glance.

Enough.

A county sheriff's supervisor arrived behind the military vehicles.

Captain Robert Gaines.

White.

Late fifties.

Gray hair.

He exited before the SUV fully settled.
