“She is.”
The biker said, “Okay.”
The marshal looked at him.
The biker repeated:
“Until we know otherwise, she’s alive.”
The girl nodded.
That became the rule.
At sunrise, another secret surfaced.
The older mechanic found it.
He had been staring at the girl’s backpack because the wolf emblem stitched into one corner looked familiar.
Not a modern patch.
Handmade.
He asked permission before touching it.
The girl nodded.
He examined the stitching.
Then removed a pocketknife.
The biker stopped him.
“What are you doing?”
“Look.”
Inside the backpack lining was a narrow seam different from the rest.
The mechanic cut two threads.
A slim USB drive dropped onto the workbench.
The marshal stared.
The girl whispered:
“I didn’t know.”
The biker believed her.
The marshal inserted the drive into an isolated laptop.
Encrypted.
But the first directory contained one unprotected video.
The mother appeared on screen.
Same eyes as the girl.
Same jaw as the biker.
The biker stopped breathing.
There was no doubt anymore.
His daughter.
The woman looked exhausted in the recording.
She spoke directly to the camera.
“If this is being watched, I failed to get back to my daughter before someone found the backup.”
The girl moved closer.
The mother continued:
“Sweetheart, none of this is your fault.”
The girl covered her mouth.
“I’m sorry I lied.”
“I’m sorry I made you memorize strange rules.”
“I’m sorry I told you never to trust strangers and then asked you to trust one.”
The mother smiled sadly.
“But if you are with the man who has the wolf tattoo, listen to me carefully.”
The biker’s eyes filled.
“He does not know who you are.”
The girl looked toward him.
The biker could not move.
The video continued.
“He does not know who I am either.”
The girl stared.
The mother took a breath.
“He is my father.”
Silence.
The mechanic lowered his head.
The marshal looked away.
The girl turned slowly toward the biker.
He had imagined this revelation dozens of ways during the night.
None prepared him for her face.
Not joy.
Not instant affection.
Confusion.
Almost betrayal.
“You're my grandfather?”
The biker tried speaking.
Nothing came.
He cleared his throat.
“I think so.”
“You think?”
“I didn't know.”
“How could you not know?”
The question was innocent.
That made it brutal.
“Your grandmother disappeared before your mother was born.”
“Why?”
The marshal answered.
“To keep them alive.”
The girl looked back at the video.
Her mother continued.
“My mother believed distance would keep the past from finding us.”
“She was wrong.”
“I found the truth after she died.”
“I found him too.”
The biker’s hands trembled.
“I watched from far away because I didn’t know whether bringing myself into his life would put my daughter in danger.”
“I told myself I had time.”
Her voice broke.
