He had said it did not matter.

The younger officer swallowed.

“I can get it.”

The sergeant snapped:

“No.”

Dispatch repeated:

“Unit Twelve, provide detainee identification.”

The woman said softly:

“Go ahead.”

The sergeant glared.

“Shut up.”

The younger officer moved toward her.

“Ma’am, what’s your name?”

She gave it.

The younger officer repeated into radio.

There was silence on the other end.

Long enough to notice.

Then:

“Unit Twelve, hold position.”

The dispatcher’s voice was no longer routine.

The sergeant stared at his partner.

“What?”

The younger officer shook head.

“I don't know.”

The woman did.

The sergeant saw that.

“What did you do?”

She looked at him.

“Nothing.”

“You called somebody.”

“My phone is over there.”

“You activated something.”

She said nothing.

He turned toward the phone.

The younger officer immediately stepped in front.

“Don't touch it.”

The sergeant stared.

“Excuse me?”

“Don't.”

“That's evidence.”

“No.”

“You don't know what it is.”

“Exactly.”

That was the moment the younger officer stopped being a follower.

He did not yet understand what was happening.

He only understood the sergeant had lost control.

And that continuing to obey could make him part of something irreversible.

The sergeant pointed at him.

“You need to remember rank.”

The younger officer’s voice shook.

“I’m remembering bodycam.”

The older man looked at the red light.

Then at the woman.

Then the street.

A black SUV turned the corner.

Not hers.

Federal.

Then another.

Then a third.

Blue lights flashed behind tinted windshields.

The sergeant’s face emptied.

The woman slowly lifted her eyes.

The lead federal vehicle stopped twenty feet away.

Three agents stepped out.

Dark jackets.

No rushed weapons display.

Controlled.

The supervising special agent walked forward.

He looked first at the cuffed woman.

“Counsel, are you injured?”

The sergeant’s mouth opened.

Counsel.

The woman answered:

“My cheek.”

“Wrists.”

“I’m otherwise okay.”
