He tried to return later.

But deep snow concealed the route.

Then an avalanche damaged the upper trail.

When spring finally opened the pass, the small shelter he remembered could no longer be found in its original location.

The land had changed.

And the woman who saved him remained a mystery.

Until tonight.

Now he sat near the fireplace in her cabin, staring at the old glove while she moved carefully between the stove and the table.

She used a sturdy rail to support herself as she walked.

Her breathing was slightly heavier after the effort, and she paused beside her reinforced chair before lowering herself into it.

The rancher watched.

He had seen her move around the cabin during previous visits, but tonight he noticed how carefully everything had been arranged.

The shelves were placed at practical heights.

The cooking tools hung within reach.

The table stood close enough to the chair that she could prepare food without constantly standing.

Several heavy wooden supports had been added beneath the floor.

He had always admired her ingenuity.

Now he realized how much work it must have taken to build a life here with so little outside help.

She noticed him looking.

“What?”

He shook his head.

“Nothing.”

She raised an eyebrow.

“That didn't look like nothing.”

He smiled faintly.

“Just wondering how you've managed all this alone.”

She followed his gaze.

Then she shrugged.

“Same way you manage a ranch alone. One problem at a time.”

He nodded.

She looked toward his injured hand.

“And a little stubbornness.”

He laughed.

“Only a little?”

She smiled.

“An unreasonable amount.”

For a moment, the cabin felt almost ordinary.

Then the rancher looked toward the glove.

The unanswered questions returned.

“Tell me about that winter.”

Her expression changed.

She folded her hands in her lap.

“Which part?”

“All of it.”

She studied him.

“Are you certain?”

He nodded.

“I've spent four years wondering.”

The woman took a slow breath.

Then she began.

At the time, she had been living in a smaller cabin farther north.

Her husband had died several years earlier, leaving her a modest property and a few pieces of equipment.

She had no children.

No close family living nearby.

And very little money.

Her extraordinary size made travel difficult, especially during winter. Many buildings in town had narrow entrances, steep steps, and furniture that couldn't support her weight safely.

She had grown tired of strangers staring.
