She stepped toward him.

“I do.”

“No.”

“Yes.”

“You’re scared.”

“So are you.”

“Clara—”

She kissed him.

Right there.

In front of sheriff, former deputy, and whatever remained of dignity.

Ethan caught her carefully.

The kiss ended with Clara crying against his chest.

“I love you too.”

Sheriff muttered:

“Wonderful.”

“Now can we arrest somebody?”

At noon next day, Black Pine Church stood empty beneath low clouds.

Clara entered alone.

Her pale blue dress disappeared beneath heavy coat.

She carried envelope.

No weapon.

She had refused one.

Gideon used to say women with weapons became dangerous to themselves.

Clara refused to let his voice decide.

But she also refused to hold a gun she was not trained to use.

Church smelled of pine and cold dust.

She waited.

Eleven fifty-eight.

Eleven fifty-nine.

Noon.

A side door opened.

A man stepped inside.

Clara stopped breathing.

Three years collapsed.

Gideon Whitmore had aged.

Thinner.

Hair longer.

A scar crossed his right temple.

But alive.

Terribly alive.

He smiled.

“Clara.”

Her body remembered fear before her mind did.

Hands cold.

Throat tight.

Shoulders pulling inward.

Gideon noticed.

He always noticed.

“Still doing that.”

She forced herself upright.

“Doing what?”

“Pretending you aren’t frightened.”

Clara looked at him.

“You're supposed to be dead.”

“I was.”

“No.”

“To everyone who mattered.”

She almost laughed.

“Your wife did not matter?”

His smile vanished.

“You were useful.”

There it was.

Not love.

Not apology.

Clara felt something surprising.

Not devastation.

Release.

For years she wondered whether she had exaggerated him in memory.

Whether grief had distorted cruelty.

Whether perhaps he had loved her badly.

Now she saw truth.

He had not loved her at all.

“What’s in safe?”

Gideon looked amused.

“You brought key?”

“Answer.”

“Property deeds.”

“Rail options.”

“Letters.”

“Enough documentation to establish ownership of Blackwood Pass.”

“You don't own it.”

“I will.”

“How?”

“You.”

Clara’s stomach tightened.

Gideon stepped closer.

“Your marriage to Blackwood is invalid.”

“Once that becomes public, he faces scandal.”

“You face prosecution for bigamy.”

She stared.

“You let me believe you were dead.”

“Can you prove it?”

Clara said nothing.

Gideon smiled.

“Exactly.”

“I offer solution.”

“What?”

“You come with me.”

“Blackwood signs pass into holding company.”

“Charges disappear.”

“Your little frontier embarrassment disappears.”

“And you return where you belong.”

Clara felt the old fear.

Then something new beside it.
