“But if she does it again?”

Aaliyah smiled.

“Then pattern matters.”

Her father's granddaughter.

Years passed.

Marcus died at eighty-one.

Peacefully.

Aaliyah was beside him.

He had been ill for months.

Not much pain.

Mostly tired.

On his last coherent afternoon, he looked at Aaliyah's arm.

The old bruise had disappeared decades earlier.

“What?”

she asked.

“Nothing.”

“You're staring.”

He smiled weakly.

“I still think about that market.”

Aaliyah sat closer.

“So do I.”

“I wanted to hit him.”

She laughed quietly.

“I know.”

“No.”

Marcus looked at her.

“I really wanted to.”

“I spent thirty-five years telling people self-control matters.”

“Then I saw that baton.”

His eyes closed briefly.

“Every lesson disappeared for about three seconds.”

Aaliyah took his hand.

“But you didn't.”

“No.”

“You followed procedure.”

Marcus opened his eyes.

“Because you were watching.”

Aaliyah shook her head.

“I wasn't.”

“Yes.”

He smiled.

“You always were.”

She felt tears arrive.

Marcus continued:

“You made me better at my job after that.”

“By getting hit?”

“No.”

“By refusing to let me turn it into a story about a powerful father protecting his daughter.”

Aaliyah looked down.

“You did that part yourself.”

“Maybe.”

He squeezed her hand weakly.

“Promise me something.”

“What?”

“Don't let Maya think power is protection.”

Aaliyah swallowed.

“What should she think?”

“That people are protection.”

“Good systems are protection.”

“Evidence is protection.”

“Courage is protection.”

“Power helps.”

He smiled.

“But power comes and goes.”

Aaliyah kissed his forehead.

“I promise.”

Marcus died two days later.

At the funeral, law-enforcement officers from across the state attended.

Aaliyah looked at rows of uniforms and thought about one uniform decades earlier.

Symbols were complicated.

They could represent service.

Authority.

Fear.

Protection.

Pride.

Abuse.

The symbol did not decide.

The person inside it did.

After the ceremony, Officer Daniels approached.

Not officer anymore.

Captain Daniels.

Gray at the temples.

Aaliyah hugged him.

They had not seen each other in years.

“He changed my life,” Daniels said.

“My father?”

“You.”

Aaliyah frowned.

Daniels continued:

“The moment you looked at me after Mercer grabbed your wrist.”

“I knew you were asking whether I was going to do anything.”

Aaliyah remembered.

“I was.”

“I failed the first answer.”

“Yes.”

Daniels smiled sadly.

“Still direct.”

“Always.”

He continued:

“But I got another chance.”

“You did.”

“I've spent twenty years teaching young officers that the partner beside them is not automatically right.”

Aaliyah smiled.

“He would be proud.”

Daniels looked toward Marcus's photograph.

“I hope so.”

“He was.”

They stood silently.

Then Daniels said:

“You know Mercer died last year?”

Aaliyah looked at him.

“No.”

“Heart attack.”

“Oh.”

Nothing else came immediately.

Aaliyah searched for anger.

Satisfaction.
