She looked toward the younger officer.

"Would you please tell me what's happening?"

He opened his mouth.

But Pike stepped between them.

"Stop asking questions."

She looked up.

For a moment, she seemed hurt.

Then whispered, "I'm only trying to understand."

The sergeant leaned closer.

"And I'm only trying to do my job."

She looked toward his badge.

Then toward his face.

"Then please let me show you the receipt."

For one brief moment, the situation could still have ended peacefully.

A simple check.

A polite explanation.

An acknowledgment that the reported suspect was someone entirely different.

But Pike was already angry.

He didn't want a reasonable explanation.

He wanted obedience.

And when the widow asked one more question, he made the first decision that would destroy the rest of his afternoon.

He seized the paper bag.

The widow gasped when the sergeant pulled the bag from her hands.

"Please be careful."

He looked inside.

The picture hook lay near the top, its small cardboard package still carrying the hardware store's price sticker. Beneath it was the cloth-wrapped velvet case.

Pike pulled the case out.

"What's this?"

The widow reached toward it instinctively.

"Please. That's my husband's."

He opened it.

The silver badge caught the sunlight.

For a moment, the sergeant examined the insignia without speaking.

Then he gave a dismissive laugh.

"Military decorations?"

She nodded.

"My husband served in the Army."

Pike looked toward her.

"Sure he did."

The words confused her.

She had expected him to recognize the design.

Or at least understand why an old woman might carefully preserve a piece of her husband's military service.

Instead, he looked amused.

"People buy this stuff online all the time."

The widow's expression changed.

"Sir, that's real."

He tilted the case.

The badge slipped from its lining and landed in his palm.

She inhaled sharply.

"Please don't take it out."

Pike stared at her.

"Why?"

"It's very old. The clasp has been repaired."

He smiled.

"So now you're telling me how to handle evidence?"

The younger officer stepped closer.

"Sergeant, there's no indication it's evidence of anything."

Pike turned.

His face hardened.

"Back off."

The young officer stopped.

Pike looked toward the widow again.

"You know what your problem is?"

She didn't answer.

He continued.

"You think because you're old, everybody has to let you do whatever you want."

Her eyes widened.

"I don't think that."

"Then stop arguing."

She swallowed.
