She told David on a rainy Thursday morning.

He was standing in the kitchen preparing coffee.

She placed the positive test beside his mug.

For a moment, he stared.

Then looked toward her.

"Naomi?"

She nodded.

Tears filled her eyes.

He set down the cup.

For several seconds, neither moved.

Then he crossed the kitchen and embraced her.

They laughed.

They cried.

And David rested his forehead against hers.

"We're having a baby?"

Naomi nodded.

"Yes."

He closed his eyes.

For a moment, he couldn't speak.

Then whispered, "Thank you."

Naomi laughed through tears.

"For what?"

He smiled.

"For letting me share this life with you."

Amanda cried when Naomi told her.

The champion was preparing for a major fight and had just finished training.

Naomi called through video.

Amanda answered wearing hand wraps.

"What happened?"

Naomi smiled.

"Why do you always think something happened?"

"Because you look like you're about to cry."

Naomi held up a tiny pair of white baby shoes.

Amanda stared.

For several seconds, she didn't move.

Then her eyes widened.

"No."

Naomi nodded.

Amanda screamed.

Several people in the gym turned toward her.

She laughed, covered her mouth, and began crying.

"Are you serious?"

Naomi nodded again.

Amanda wiped her eyes.

"Oh my God."

For a moment, she couldn't speak.

Then whispered, "I'm going to be an auntie."

Naomi laughed.

"You're already acting like one."

Amanda leaned toward the camera.

"Listen to me. That baby is going to have the coolest aunt in the world."

Naomi smiled.

"I have no doubt."

Amanda's expression softened.

Then she said something Naomi would remember months later, when the police sergeant shoved her onto the pavement.

"No matter what happens, I'm showing up for you."

Naomi laughed.

"You always do."

Amanda nodded.

"Then you already know."

The pregnancy was not easy.

During the first trimester, Naomi experienced severe nausea and exhaustion. Some mornings she could barely stand long enough to prepare breakfast, and by the time she reached work she felt as though she'd already completed an entire day.

David adjusted his schedule whenever possible.

He cooked meals.

Attended appointments.

And learned which foods Naomi could tolerate when almost everything else made her feel sick.

Amanda appeared at the house with groceries so frequently that David joked she should have her own key.

She already did.

By the second trimester, Naomi began feeling better.
