“GET YOUR HANDS OFF THAT BOY AND LEAVE THIS POOL RIGHT NOW!”

The police officer's voice cut through the elegant beachfront resort like a gunshot.

Conversations stopped. Champagne glasses hovered halfway to people's lips. A woman reclining beneath a white umbrella lowered her sunglasses, while two wealthy businessmen turned away from their lunch to watch the confrontation unfolding beside the turquoise swimming pool.

I stood barefoot on the warm stone deck, holding my seven-year-old son's hand.

His name was Noah.

He wore bright-blue swimming trunks, his short black curls were damp from the pool, and he held a melting red popsicle in his free hand. The red syrup was dripping down his fingers, but he barely noticed.

He was too frightened of the man standing in front of us.

The officer was large, with a heavy build, short blond hair, a flushed face, and a navy-blue uniform stretched tightly across his shoulders. His nameplate read RUSK.

He pointed a thick finger inches from my face.

“I SAID YOU NEED TO GO!”

I pulled Noah closer.

“Officer, please lower your voice. You're frightening my son.”

The man laughed.

“Then maybe you should've thought about that before sneaking into a private resort.”

I stared at him.

“I haven't sneaked anywhere.”

“Oh, really?”

“No. I entered through the main lobby.”

He glanced at my swimsuit, then at the expensive lounge chairs surrounding the pool.

His expression turned contemptuous.

“And I suppose you just happened to find yourself in the private guests-only area.”

I took a controlled breath.

“My son and I are authorized to be here.”

“Everybody's got a story.”

Beside him stood a blonde female officer in her early thirties. She looked visibly uncomfortable, her eyes moving between her partner, my son, and the silver-haired resort manager waiting several feet behind them.

The manager wore a beautifully tailored light-gray suit and an expensive wristwatch. His hair was swept neatly backward, and he held a tablet against his chest.

He wasn't shouting.

He didn't need to.

His name was Graham Bellamy, and he was the man who had called the police.

I looked directly at him.

“Mr. Bellamy, you know why I'm here.”

He smiled.

It was a thin, unpleasant expression.

“Ma'am, I know that you have repeatedly refused to provide an acceptable explanation for your presence in our exclusive pool facilities.”

I felt my jaw tighten.

“You haven't asked me for one.”

He raised his eyebrows.

“Must we really do this in front of the other guests?”

I looked around.

A dozen people were watching.
