I swallowed.

“My wrist is sore, but I'm okay.”

Noah began crying harder.

I held him.

For several seconds, I didn't care who was watching.

Then I heard Lauren's voice.

“Officer Rusk, step back.”

He sounded irritated.

“Price, I'm handling this.”

“No.”

Her voice became firmer.

“You're not continuing physical contact with her.”

For a moment, the two officers stared at each other.

Then Rusk took a step backward.

I looked toward Lauren.

“Thank you.”

She nodded.

Then she glanced at Noah.

“Would you like us to arrange a quiet place where your son can sit?”

I took a breath.

“Yes. But he'll remain with me unless I arrange otherwise.”

“Of course.”

I looked toward Julian, the young pool attendant standing nearby.

His face was pale.

“Julian?”

He stepped forward nervously.

“Yes, ma'am?”

“Could you please bring us some water and clean towels?”

He nodded immediately.

“Of course.”

I smiled gently.

“Thank you.”

Then I stood.

My wrist ached.

My heart was racing.

But my voice was steady.

“Mr. Bellamy.”

The manager straightened.

“Ms. Carter.”

“I need the resort's general counsel, the transition team, and the head of security contacted immediately.”

He nodded too quickly.

“Certainly.”

“And I need the pool surveillance footage preserved.”

His expression changed.

“Of course.”

“Not edited. Not selectively exported. Preserved in its original form under the applicable retention procedures.”

He swallowed.

“Yes.”

I looked toward Lauren.

“Please notify your supervisor. I want this incident documented accurately, and I want an independent review of the officer's conduct.”

Rusk gave a bitter laugh.

“Oh, come on.”

I turned.

He looked toward the guests.

Then back at me.

“Now that we know you're the owner, everybody's acting like this is some major incident.”

I stared at him.

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Then I asked quietly.

“Officer Rusk, would you have behaved differently if I'd been an ordinary resort guest?”

He frowned.

“What?”

“Would you have treated me differently if I had no ownership documents?”

He hesitated.

Then looked toward Bellamy.

The manager was silent.

I continued.

“Because that's the question that matters.”

Rusk's face reddened.

He opened his mouth.

Then closed it.

Lauren looked toward him.

For the first time, she seemed genuinely ashamed to be standing beside her partner.

I took a breath.

“I'm not interested in being treated respectfully because I'm the person who signs the resort's ownership documents.”

I looked toward Noah.

“I'm interested in knowing why a mother with a valid reservation was treated this way in the first place.”

The pool deck remained silent.
