The message stated that his termination had been placed under immediate review, that the company would preserve his existing benefits and compensation status while the review proceeded, and that an independent representative would contact him when he was ready.

The father stared at the screen.

He read it again.

Then looked toward his daughter.

She was arranging Captain Snow beneath the Christmas tree.

His grandmother-in-law noticed his expression.

"What is it?"

The father handed her the phone.

She read the message.

Then looked up.

"Is that good?"

He took a slow breath.

"I don't know yet."

The older woman nodded.

But she smiled.

"At least somebody's listening."

The father looked toward the little star.

Then whispered, "Maybe."

The CEO didn't leave Silver Pines until after midnight.

By then, qualified contractors had assessed the initial concerns, and a controlled plan for keeping the affected systems out of ordinary service was underway.

The resort had relocated guests from the rooms that could not yet be cleared for continued occupancy.

Some families were moved to other available suites.

Others were offered accommodations at nearby properties and appropriate transportation.

Refunds and assistance were arranged according to each situation.

The staff worked for hours.

Not everyone was pleased.

A businessman complained loudly that his family had paid for a mountain-view suite.

A woman became furious when the alternative hotel didn't have the fireplace she had requested.

And one couple demanded to speak with the CEO personally.

She did.

She apologized for the disruption.

Explained that the resort was responding to an unresolved safety concern.

And made clear that no guest would be asked to remain in an area that hadn't been appropriately cleared.

The couple eventually accepted the relocation.

But as the woman returned to the lobby, she noticed a housekeeper sitting alone near a service corridor.

The employee looked exhausted.

She was holding a paper cup of water.

The CEO approached.

"Are you all right?"

The housekeeper stood immediately.

"Yes, ma'am."

The woman shook her head gently.

"You can sit."

The employee hesitated.

Then sat again.

The CEO took the chair beside her.

"Long night?"

The woman nodded.

"Yes."

The CEO glanced toward the corridor.

"How many rooms did your team prepare for the transfers?"

The housekeeper named the number.

It was far more than the CEO expected.

She frowned.

"Did you get help?"

The employee smiled faintly.

"Everybody helped."

The CEO nodded.

Then noticed the housekeeper's phone.

A photograph of two young children glowed on the screen.

"Your family?"

The employee nodded.

"My boys."

The CEO smiled.

"How old?"

"Six and ten."

"Are they waiting for you?"

The housekeeper lowered her eyes.

"With their aunt."

For several seconds, neither spoke.

Then the employee added, "I told them I'd be home before bedtime."
