He looked back at her.

His eyes were red from exhaustion.

"That's good, because I don't have anything left to explain."

The woman swallowed.

"Your dismissal is being reviewed."

He gave another bitter laugh.

"Reviewed?"

He shook his head.

"The manager told me I could either stay at work or go to my daughter's hospital room."

Her face changed.

"He said that?"

"Word for word."

The mechanic gripped the steering wheel.

"She was being taken into surgery. I told him I needed to leave. He told me if I walked out, I shouldn't come back."

The woman stared.

The man continued.

"So I walked out."

His voice trembled.

"And I'd do it again."

The woman couldn't answer.

He looked away.

"Now, if you'll excuse me, my little girl has been asking for me since lunchtime."

He began closing the window.

The woman stepped backward.

Then said quietly, "You were right to go."

The window stopped.

He looked at her.

For a moment, something flickered across his face.

Surprise.

Maybe anger.

Maybe the exhaustion of hearing the words he'd needed from someone with authority only after the damage was done.

Then he nodded once.

"Tell that to the man who fired me."

He drove away.

The woman remained beside the road.

Snow fell steadily around her.

The red taillights disappeared into the darkness.

And she realized that the phone call hadn't merely interrupted her Christmas Eve.

It had exposed something deeply wrong inside the company she'd spent the last seven years building.

What she didn't know was that the mechanic's dismissal was connected to a much larger secret.

One involving falsified maintenance records, an expensive luxury resort, and a man who had been willing to risk his own livelihood rather than sign a document he knew was false.

By the following morning, hundreds of holiday guests would discover that the most important employee at Silver Pines wasn't the manager in the expensive suit.

It was the single father who had been ordered to choose between his job and his daughter.

And the woman whose car he'd repaired would have to decide whether her company cared more about protecting its reputation or protecting the people who trusted it.

Six days before Christmas, the single father had been standing inside the mechanical room beneath Silver Pines Lodge when he first noticed something was wrong.

The resort was one of the most expensive mountain properties in Colorado.

Its main building stood against a dramatic backdrop of snow-covered pine trees and distant peaks.

There were enormous stone fireplaces, polished wooden floors, luxurious guest suites, heated pools, private dining rooms, and floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the mountains.

At Christmas, the entire property glittered with decorations.

Garlands hung along the staircases.
