Property deeds.
Letters for birthdays.
One for Claire to open the morning she turned thirty.
One for her wedding, if she ever married.
One marked simply:
For the day you think you’ve failed.
She had not opened that one.
But nothing about a car.
Nothing about an envelope hidden inside it.
Claire looked at Daniel.
“Why would it say ‘the man who stops to help her’?”
He shook his head.
“I don’t know.”
“You’re the man who stopped.”
“Yes.”
“That’s impossible.”
“Probably.”
“Don’t say probably.”
“Okay.”
“It is impossible.”
Daniel looked at the connector.
Then at the tape residue behind the fuse box.
His mechanic’s mind had clearly begun working.
“Claire.”
“What?”
“That plug didn’t work itself loose.”
Her heart stopped.
“What?”
He pointed.
“The locking tab is intact.”
“So?”
“It should not back out under vibration.”
“Could somebody have installed it incorrectly?”
“Maybe.”
“You don’t believe that.”
“No.”
Claire stared.
“You think someone unplugged my car.”
“I think someone partially disconnected it.”
“When?”
“No idea.”
The envelope felt heavier.
Daniel looked around the snowy road.
“No other cars stopped while you were here?”
“No.”
“Anybody touch the Cadillac today?”
“Valet this morning.”
“Where?”
“Hotel downtown.”
“Before that?”
“My office garage.”
Daniel looked at the handwritten envelope.
“Your father knew the car.”
“Yes.”
“He knew this location?”
Claire shook her head.
“No.”
“Maybe the message wasn’t about this specific road.”
“What else could it mean?”
He had no answer.
Claire looked toward the sign.
PINE HOLLOW LODGE — 100 MILES.
That was wrong.
She frowned.
“Wait.”
Daniel followed her gaze.
“What?”
“The lodge isn’t one hundred miles.”
“No.”
“It’s about twelve.”
He looked at the sign again.
Then laughed softly.
“That says Pine Hollow Lodge, hundred miles?”
“Yes.”
“It’s an old sign.”
“What?”
He walked closer.
Snow covered part of the bottom.
Daniel brushed it away.
Under the printed words was a faded smaller line.
SCENIC ROUTE 100 — MILES TO STATE LINE
Claire exhaled.
Nothing mystical.
Still strange.
She looked at the envelope.
“Open it.”
Daniel shook his head.
“That’s yours.”
“It’s addressed to you.”
“Not by name.”
“By description.”
“I still think you should.”
Claire swallowed.
Then carefully opened the sleeve.
Inside was one folded sheet.
And a photograph.
