The garage security footage was retrieved at 11:08 that morning.

Marcus was not allowed to watch immediately.

That was correct.

He was a witness.

Potential complainant.

Not investigator.

He appreciated the boundary even while hating it.

Sergeant Chen ordered the relevant digital file copied before anyone from the condo board could access the system.

The footage showed Marcus entering the garage at 9:17.

His car was admitted by a temporary gate code issued through management.

He parked in his mother’s assigned visitor space.

He removed the leather folder.

Walked toward the residential elevator.

Tried the electronic credential once.

Red light.

Again.

Red.

He looked at the pass.

Checked the envelope.

Then approached the property-management intercom.

Before he pressed it, Diane Mercer entered frame.

She had been standing near her own vehicle.

Watching.

No accidental encounter.

She crossed the lane directly toward him.

The camera had no sound, but body language was clear.

Diane pointed.

Marcus responded.

She stepped closer.

He stepped back.

She reached toward his folder.

He moved it away.

Then she took out her phone.

Marcus turned toward the intercom again.

She stepped in front of him.

He stopped.

She made the 911 call.

Seven minutes before she later claimed Marcus had “repeatedly tried doors.”

He had touched one reader twice.

Then came the moment with the pass.

Marcus removed one credential from the envelope.

Held it up.

Diane reached.

He moved his hand away.

A paper fell.

He bent to retrieve it.

Diane’s foot moved.

The access card slid nearly twelve feet beneath her Mercedes.

She looked down at it.

Then looked around.

Then stepped away.

Intentional.

Undeniable.

The hallway outside the security office became silent when Chen finished watching.

Hayes sat beside her.

His face looked sick.

“She did that before I arrived.”

Chen nodded.

“She knew he had an access pass.”

“Yes.”

“She told me he couldn’t produce one.”

“Yes.”

Hayes leaned back.

“Damn.”

Chen looked at him.

“What?”

“I believed her.”

“Yes.”

“She was specific.”

Chen nodded.

“That happens.”

“She kept saying she knew everybody.”

“Yes.”

“And he…”

Hayes stopped.

Chen waited.

“He wouldn’t show me ID.”

“To her.”

“I know.”

“I treated that like suspicious behavior.”

Chen did not rescue him.

“Why?”

Hayes rubbed his face.

“I don’t know.”

“That isn’t good enough.”

He nodded.

“I know.”

Chen rewound.

Marcus standing.

Diane pointing.

Hayes arriving.

The bodycam provided sound.

Diane:

Officer, finally. This man has been trying to force his way inside.

Marcus:

I used an access pass.

Diane:

He has no pass.

Marcus:

One is in my hand.
