Why?

She knew the answer would not fit neatly into one word.

Race was part of it.

Class.

Gender.

Uniform authority.

Her own insecurity.

Gary’s polished confidence.

Denise’s refusal to perform fear.

Everything mixed.

At 2:30, Claire asked Denise for identification.

Denise gave her name.

Claire asked for a license.

Denise asked whether she was legally required to provide physical ID during a voluntary store inquiry.

Technically, not yet.

Claire knew that.

But the question irritated her.

At 2:31, Gary said:

“See? She’s refusing.”

Claire let him translate the encounter for her.

That was one mistake.

At 2:32, Claire took Denise by the arm.

Another.

Denise immediately said:

“Do not grab me without explaining what you are doing.”

Claire heard aggression.

The bodycam later showed something else.

Denise’s voice did not rise.

Claire’s did.

At 2:33, Claire decided to detain.

At 2:34, she cuffed Denise.

At 2:35, she made the joke about the police chief.

At 2:36, Thomas Reed walked through the door.

Twelve minutes.

That was all.

Sergeant Knox returned at 4:18.

Claire was still in the employee office.

Knox closed the door.

“Internal Affairs is coming.”

Claire nodded.

“You are relieved of duty pending review.”

Another nod.

“Give me your duty weapon.”

Claire removed it carefully.

Then her spare magazines.

Then her department identification.

She stopped when she reached the badge Denise had returned.

Knox held out her hand.

Claire gave it to her.

The second time losing the badge hurt more.

Because this time it happened correctly.

Knox sat across from her.

“I’m going to tell you something once.”

Claire stared at the floor.

“Look at me.”

Claire did.

Knox continued:

“Do not call Chief Reed.”

“I wasn’t going to.”

“Do not call Denise Reed.”

“I know.”

“Do not contact store employees.”

“I know.”

“Do not watch leaked video if it appears.”

Claire laughed weakly.

“That seems unrealistic.”

“Try.”

Knox leaned closer.

“And do not decide the outcome of the investigation before investigators do.”

Claire blinked.

Knox continued:

“You rushed once today because you wanted certainty.”

“Do not do the same thing to yourself.”

Claire felt her eyes fill.

“I screwed up.”

“Yes.”

The direct answer hurt.

Knox did not soften it.

“You did.”

“Badly.”

Claire swallowed.

“Am I getting fired?”

“I don’t know.”

“Chief said—”

“Chief Reed recused himself twenty minutes ago.”

Claire looked up.

Knox continued:

“He also reported his own conduct when he removed your badge.”

“What?”
