Repulsed.
A mother who saw damaged legs and chose freedom.
That woman vanished in less than a minute.
In her place stood someone more complicated.
A young mother lied to.
Controlled.
Grieving.
Searching.
But even relief hurt.
Because the story Clara had used to understand herself was gone.
She did not know what replaced it.
“I want Evelyn.”
Julian nodded.
“Your grandmother?”
“My mother.”
He understood the correction.
“Yes.”
“I need her.”
“I’ll get her.”
“No.”
Clara wiped her face.
“I’ll call.”
Evelyn answered on the second ring.
“Are you having fun?”
Clara could not speak.
The change in Evelyn’s voice was immediate.
“What happened?”
“Grandma.”
“Clara?”
“She didn't leave me.”
Silence.
Then:
“What?”
“My mother.”
Clara began crying.
“She didn't leave.”
Evelyn did not ask for explanation.
She only said:
“Where are you?”
Clara told her.
“I’m coming.”
“You're forty minutes away.”
“Thirty if Tennessee drivers understand the left lane.”
Despite everything, Clara laughed.
Evelyn heard it.
“Stay where people are.”
“I’m safe.”
“Who is with you?”
Clara looked at Julian.
“A man.”
Pause.
“What man?”
“This is complicated.”
“Does he have a last name?”
“Carter.”
“Age?”
“Twenty-five.”
“Occupation?”
Clara almost smiled.
“Grandma.”
“I’m driving. Humor me.”
Julian whispered:
“Architect.”
“He says architect.”
“He says?”
Evelyn became suspicious.
Julian heard.
“Tell her licensed architect.”
Clara repeated it.
Evelyn said:
“I don't care if he designed the Pentagon. Stay in public.”
Then she hung up.
Clara looked at Julian.
“She likes you.”
“I felt warmth.”
They sat beneath the magnolia.
Several minutes passed.
Then Julian said:
“For what it's worth, I really did ask you to dance because I wanted to.”
Clara looked at him.
“Before you knew?”
“Yes.”
“You didn't recognize the bracelet?”
“Not until Margaret reacted.”
“Why not?”
“The photograph is faded.”
“And I was trying very hard not to stare at your body.”
She raised an eyebrow.
Julian went red.
“I mean the bracelet.”
“Smooth.”
“I had fourteen minutes and still failed.”
Clara laughed again.
