“I offered to return to 3C.”
“I heard you.”
For a moment, he seemed relieved.
Then he added quietly, “I'm sorry they treated you that way.”
I took a breath.
“Thank you.”
Then I turned toward the exit.
The passengers watched silently.
Some looked sympathetic.
Others embarrassed.
A few had the uncomfortable expression of people who had seen something wrong and weren't sure whether they should have intervened.
I didn't blame every person for remaining seated.
Not everyone knew what to do.
But I noticed the ones who tried.
The passenger who asked security to explain why force was necessary.
The older man who documented the sequence.
Martin, who offered to surrender the disputed seat.
Emma, who stated what she'd observed.
And the captain, who insisted on finding out whether there had been a genuine safety issue.
Their choices mattered.
When I reached the forward galley, Emma stepped beside me.
“Mr. Cole?”
I turned.
“Yes?”
She looked toward Halden.
Then lowered her voice.
“I want you to know that your reservation was confirmed when you boarded.”
I nodded.
“Thank you.”
She hesitated.
“There was a manual override this morning.”
I felt my pulse quicken.
“Do you know who entered it?”
She shook her head.
“Not yet. But the change didn't come through the ordinary process.”
I studied her.
For a moment, I considered asking more questions.
Then stopped.
The flight attendant wasn't my employee.
She had obligations to the airline.
And I didn't want to put her under pressure to disclose information she wasn't authorized to share.
Instead, I said, “Please document what you observed through the appropriate safety and compliance channels. If anyone asks you to change your account, seek independent advice.”
Emma's eyes filled slightly.
Then she nodded.
“I will.”
I looked toward her name badge.
“Thank you, Emma.”
She smiled faintly.
Then I stepped into the jet bridge.
Two airline ground supervisors were waiting.
One looked frightened.
The other seemed determined to solve the issue as quickly as possible.
I requested a private room where we could discuss the incident without disrupting boarding.
They agreed.
As we walked toward the terminal, my phone began ringing again.
Maya.
I answered.
“Adrian.”
Her voice was controlled.
“The formal notice has been issued. The pending draw is suspended for review under the agreement. Outside counsel is confirming the relevant conditions, and the investment committee is meeting now.”
